After I read the OP I had one of those "daydream moments". I envisioned myself getting into the Tacoma, putting it in 4WD low, locking the rear differential in, then I slowly backed up with the old man's car still under there! I kept going until the truck and car were clear of each other!

At lease it will be easer to repair than the Gen 2 Toyota has stated thats why they made the back bumper a 3 piece so it could be replaced in sections

From my experience on other brands, it's still a pain in the butt to change just one corner. Stuff underneath gets bent and they way pieces overlap make disassembly a bear.

Most likely it will show up on carfax.
the damage doesn't seem to be that big, can the old man spot you a few bucks to buy that piece and install it yourself?

I know it won't but the OP stated he prefers not to show up on his carfax.
I'm planning on keeping my truck for a long time so I wouldn't care much for carfax.

    True.

Last time my car was hit on a parking lot, my insurance covered it. Never did show up on carfax. Not sure if it depends on company or state or what

Unfortunately, I think everyone should have to take the skills test at least every 5 years and all of the license tests should be stricter. As much as I hate doing stuff like that, you can be a pretty crappy driver and still get a license. There are tons of bad drivers out there of all ages. Also, everyone should have to take a "reflex/minimal acceptable response time" type of test at the same time.

Carfax is a kind of ok tool, but it may not be full truth, and should be taken only as a data point.

It's only the defacto info standard because they made themselves so. And dealers found out they could gain credibility by giving a buyer a copy of a clean Carfax (accurate or not).

So if something appears, you can make a decision whether it bothers you or not. If something doesn't appear, and is actually an underlying problem, you're out of luck.

A pre-purchase inspection by a good independent shop is the most valuable used vehicle purchase tool IMHO. And if it's a higher mile or performance vehicle, a compression test (including leakdown) and an oil sample sent to a lab isn't a bad investment either.

My 20 something nephew has totaled a half dozen vehicle and ran away several times. This old man has 1.5 million accident free miles.
just saying, no link between age snd honesty.

He wasn't talking about honesty or integrity. He was talking about driving ability... reaction time and vision, not to mention mental acuity, diminish for most of us as we get older. It's a fact of life. But getting older beats the alternative.

For those of you interested on the cost to repair a bumper cap by an approved USAA Body shop....

it gets pricey very quick. A hand print sized mark on my old car was around 3k to fix. (sister tagged a short yellow pole turning)

Ask the insurance for a depreciation check.

I never understood the whole insurance card thing since I've heard the same thing.

Massachusetts has no insurance cards. Your insurance company name is just printed on your registration. Not sure why other states feel the need to have actual cards.

I'd say the need to carry an insurance card will go away within 5 years. It's antiquated.
