Ian................be sure to clean the gun really well.............even take it all apart to do so. you want to remove any and all rust from every area you can bro. then.......you may need to spend a few bucks and get a decent gun bluing kit(bass pro and cabelas has them...walmart has a cheap one thats decent too) and reblue the barrel and receiver. just a heads up...............and any springs and moving parts that look like they may be worn pretty bad.......find new stuff for it...kinda rebuild it so to speak. it would not be good if you went and shot it and something malfunctioned on the gun....you could get hurt. just a heads up man.

oh yeah...............rem-oil is your friend for the most part.:)

thanks, will. I do plan on rebuilding it so to speak. but i got a good buddy of mine who is going to take a look at it and make sure it is still functional. but yeah ill make a note to tell him about the rebluing kit. so how exactly would i remove the light oxidation from the outside of the barrel? by using this rebluing kit?

My grandads old guns were in a damp basement, and showed some rust. I used steelwool, like the "OOO" very fine wool to get at the rust. The Blueing kits are a "Cold Blue" and aren't as good as a hot blue, that involves some pretty nasty chemicals from what I have heard. I did the cold blue from wally world years back. They turned out pretty good, but are a bit lite in some areas. Either I didn't prep the metal enough ot my lack of experience, either way the rust was gone and I make sure I keep oil on them yearly, I don't shoot my grandads guns often. Keep em' dry, use some oil, and think of the guy who gave em' to ya' often.

I just followed the directions on the box, if the gun is a sentimental piece and not a million dollar collector gun then just use the fine steel wool to remove the surface rust and then re-blue it according to box instructions. And yes scrub the gun with steel wool, I think the re blue kit has more than one component. The cleaning, the degreasing and the final blue. It was 15 years ago and the guns are fine. Just get the rust taken car of before you try and refinish the bare metal. Do a Google search on refinishing a firearm/rifle. If the rifle is something you may want to sell then look towards the pros, if you want your children to have it one day, possibly do it yourself. Adds to the history of the gun and makes it a part of you, your grandfather and those you pass it along to.

but, from the looks, do you think its salvageable? the firing pin works, the springs were well oiled and everything looks good structure wise. oh yeah i fieldstriped it. and the bottom is not even rusted at all. the stock of the rifle kept the underside in good condition. the bolt assembly needs to be oiled.
