This is not only my first Tacoma, but my first post 96 4x4. I built my Jeeps so they would move if only one wheel, front or rear, had traction. Even though I have read a lot of explanations on the Tacoma 4x4 I'm still not sure if all 4 wheels pull. My 2015 has the 4 hi and 4 lo and also the VSC. No other buttons or switches exist. If three wheels are on ice will the one on pavement get traction in 4 wheel drive ? Or does it work like most 4x4's with one front wheel and one rear wheel with the least traction doing all the work ?? thanks

Welcome. I would firstly consult the manual with whateve options your truck came with. I see it says you have a TRD Sport. I'm not sure what the ASC is, maybe you mean VSC?

Welcome from another old jeeper . basic answer is yes if you're equipped with ASC it will apply some braking to the slipping wheels channeling power to the wheel with traction. It is not as good as a pair of lockers but will usually keep you moving.

VSC is right. Sorry for the error. I have looked at the manual and it helps some, I just wanted to know if I was understanding it properly. Thanks

Thanks for the help. Relating it back to my old jeep explains a lot. I understand the braking and it sounds like a great system but the manual also went into locked axel buttons etc. My jeeps had cable actuated OX front and limited slip rear with a select trac transfer case. In 4x4 low it would move mountains. Don't get me wrong, I love my Tacoma, just want to know her better.

Does a 96 have those features?
