Been driving a 1973 Dodge Van for 37 years. Gonna be 80 soon and want to Taco it up. My room mate had a 1st gen V6 SR5 and we drove the snot out of it.

Need help here. I would like to stay with the simple stuff in a 2nd Gen like my van…roll up windows, manual seat, mirror, etc. but a 4cyl Access door.

Any suggestions what year that would be? I know the Base models have that but haven’t seen one on youtube yet with the Acess door.

    Thanks.

I’d recommend the 2.7L PreRunner w/5spd manual transmission.

    I believe they were 05’-13’?

I think @PennSilverTaco might know what years the 5 lug were made?

5 Lug?? Newbie here :) What does that indicate. I've watched a lot of youtube vids and heard that but never put it together with a specific model/year.

    Thanks.

5 lug refers to the 2WD only truck. (And the wheels have 5 lug nuts)
They are typically lower to the ground and smaller.
6 Lug refers to the 4WD (and PreRunner which is 2WD)

The PerRunner is built on the 4WD chassis. And it a bit more heavy duty.
It has bigger suspension and a different rear differential gear ratio.
I recommend the PreRunner because it’s “Heavier Duty” and is available with “Standard” features.

I liked mine. Plenty of room to work under the hood. And had enough power to tow if I needed to.

I like stripped models too, but they are hard to find. Also hard to find are trucks that haven't been modified, which I have no interest in either.

Manual seat won't be hard to find, mirror I have no clue, and windows practically all are electric. Maybe two wheel drive trucks will be less optioned than 4Xs.

I've got a low milage 2012 Taco for sale cheap because it's not pretty, but it's not a four cylinder 2wd.

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
Welcome to TW, from a fellow desert dweller.

I'll keep an eye out for anything that fits the build going up for sale, but good luck finding someone getting rid of one!

Also, just for future reference on the forum, anything below the long line in a post is a "signature" and isn't actually part of their comment or reply, just something they use to personalize their posts or, in this case, links to things that they find useful and helpful. Hope that helps!

Thanks Shooter. I will start doing some research with those parameters. The frustrating think I see on youtube is so many of the vids are for young folks who want their trucks pretty and looking tough. I mean, after all, they are pickups :) Here in mountains where I live there are "work" trucks and "fun" trucks. A 2WD 4cyl will do me fine. Just pulling my motorcycle around will be cool and easy.

Thanks. From what I have seen on youtube, the early 2nd gens have less electric stuff on them. In my van I adjust the mirrors once in a few months or so, haven't moved the seat in 15 years, don't need all that sort of stuff like keyless entry. My room mate's 1st gen SR5 V6 as cool as it was had all that and over 4 years had to fix widows, etc.
