I got this 1988 back in January, 4cyl 5 speed, it's loaded with electric windows, locks, mirrors, factory sunroof, came with power antenna, its no longer there. I can't get the cruise to work yet, an the ac compressor was bad. I drive it to work about 3 days a week, i put some howling mud tires on it. It sounds good going down the road, it's fun to drive.

Here's my '82 project truck, just starting the restoration process. Hoping to do complete restore and bring back th looking new again. Mechanically, truck is in great shape. Body is good except for bed which has a fair amount of rust, currently looking for a new bed. If I can't find one soon ( been looking hard for 6 weeks ), I will start repairing current bed.

Do these have an earlier version of the 22R in them, or a different engine?

2016 Super Chevy Show at Maple Grove Raceway in Monhton, Pennsylvania. I initially thought this was a 1970s Chevy LUV because, well, it was at a Super Chevy Show. Then I realized it was a Toyota, and then I remembered one of the unwritten rules of Super Chevy shows I read about in Super Chevy magazine... "As long as it's a Chevy or powered by a Chevy..."

Yes, it has the original 22R engine, 193k miles. Up to '79, the pickups had the 20R engine, than in '79 they changed to the 22R. The 22R engines are one of the best motors Toyota has ever built in my opinion. My '82 had over 500k miles on the engine with only routine maintenance. The only mistake Toyota made with the 22R engine was in '83 they changed from metal to plastic timing chain guides which usually by 90k miles they had to be replaced as they broke/wore out. Other than that they are bulletproof.

I am going to keep this truck as original as possible, with the exception of a 4" lift, 35" Cooper STT Max tires, rear locker and re-gearing. It did come as a Deluxe model and I'm going to restore as an SR5. Not sure what color I'm going to paint it yet, may or may not keep it blue.

There is a part of me, being a diesel guy, that wants to drop either a Toyota or Cummins diesel in the truck. It has been done before but it takes quite a bit of work. The guy I bought this truck from has a '79 that he is restoring that he took a Toyota diesel out of a 2 wheel drive truck and put in the '79. He's not done yet, but is moving along. If my '83's motor was not in good condition I would definitely do the swap, I'm just not sure I would want to add the extra work to my project. However, if I find a Cummins at the right time and price, who knows!

And since the truck is a '79, putting any engine (gas or diesel) from any country in it wouldn't matter because the truck is legally an antique! I love loopholes!

Yea, I forgot to make that point as well, mine will be considered an antique the end of next February.

In North Carolina, a vehicle has to be almost 40 years old to be considered an antique?

Has to be no less than 35 years old to be an antique.

Yea, I can remember when it used to be 25 years! Not many vehicles make it 35 years.

Except Toyotas! The reason so many vehicles die prematurely is not because anything under the hood, but because of rust! That's why early Z-cars are so rare!
