Okay, so in researching coils and looking at stock replacement coils for my '05 I came across the Moog 81108. It's supposedly a stock Off-Road package replacement coil, but the specs reminded me of the OME 886 (which seems to be regarded more as a stout replacement/upgrade and not so much a stock replacement). I digress...

    OME:

    p/n #886
    Free Height: 402mm (15.82")
    Bar Diameter: 17.5mm (0.68")
    Rate: 660 lbs
    Price: $167.20/pair (Wheeler's)

    Moog:
    p/n #81108
    Free Height: 367mm (14.46")
    Bar Diameter: 17.78mm (0.70")
    Rate: 660 lbs
    Price: $58.78/pair (Amazon)

    Toyota/TRD:
    p/n #48131-AD221 (right), 48131-AD231 (left)
    Free Height: 14"
    Bar Diameter: ??
    Rate: 540lb
    Price: #171.39/ea (Toyota)

Anyway, the 81108 seem comparable to the 886 aside from being ~1.3" shorter, and about $100 cheaper. I searched and didn't find anything relevant to our 2nd gen Tacos (did find some old mixed reviews from the FJ crowd though).

TL/DR: I'm curious if anyone here can share some 2nd Gen hands-on experience with the Moogs?

I don't have any experience with the Moog but if that spring rate is correct and not a typo, it's gonna ride hella rough without extra weight up front. If you wanted to run a bumper+winch but keep the height stock it might be a good choice.

But I would verify those spring specs first.

    Hello.

Current owner of a 2009 DCSB with OME 885x on 5100's set at 0. I have about 2.5 inches of lift on my DCSB with the OME 885x.

OME 886 would give you a lift of close to 3 inches. I'm not sure what the shorter coil on the Moog would translate to, i.e., 1.3" shorter coil doesn't mean 1.3" less lift. Most guys around here run the OME coils b/c their a quality part for the $$$.

No matter which direction you go, OME or Moog, you'll need to upgrade your strut to handle the higher spring rate of the coil so you're not bouncing down the road. The stock strut, even the TRD Bilstein, does not have the dampening characteristics to handle a higher spring rate than stock specifications. Most guys here pair the OME coil with the Bilstein 5100 series strut usually ordered both from Down South Motor Sports since they give a TacomaWorld Discount. I've had my 5100's w/ OME 885x coils for 1.5 years on my truck and I'm quite happy with the daily drivable characteristics with the pairing.

You might also need to upgrade to an aftermarket upper control arm in order to bring your alignment into spec. Some guys didn't have to, most had to. I had to. I would recommend JBA (Jeepin By Al) upper control arms. Very beefy and a great price also!

I specifically left out desired lift, shocks, UCAs, and additional front end weight out when I started this thread in the hopes of keeping this discussion centric to the springs. Good info regardless, and much appreciated!

For what it's worth; 5100s are already on my list, and the truck is getting a US Offroad hidden winch mount and the Smittybilt XRC 9500 winch from my Jeep - so adding ~125lbs up front. I am looking to dump the RevTek spacers and keep overall lift to about 1.5" over stock when done. Ditching the 285/70s and 17x9" wheels and going back to 265/75 on stock 16x7" wheels. Wheeler's 1.5" AAL out back (to help counter the weight of the shell and gear).

I think in this instance (going from experience), since the OME and Moog coils are both linear (not progressive), with the same rating/coil diameter, the Moog coil being 1.3" shorter should result in a 1.3" lower stance than the OME (with the 5100 set at zero). I do think they'll be too stiff for what I want - but again the point of this thread was to elicit experience on the springs, not necessarily my setup.
