Hmm this is an old thread that just keeps getting revived. So I'll bring it back again. I'm kicking around getting new front shocks but I have 886 coils and a pile of weight. So I may look into the 5100s my front makes a lot of noise offroad. They seem to hit the bumpstops a lot and it makes a popping sound on the rebound. So I think a shock is bad. Idk. It depends.

As I understand it, the biggest issue with 5100's and 886's is the spring rate for the 886 over taxes the rebound dampening capabilities of the 5100. 5100's are fine with the lower rate spring (such as 885/887's) and well within the capabilities of the 5100. They tend to "jackhammer" with hard rebound when using the 886's. With that said, the higher spring rate also causes premature failure due in large part to the internal shock rebound valving being overworked.

I read way more complaints from people who are running Nitrichargers and 886 springs than I do 5100s and 886 springs. The topping out/jackhammering issue seems to be exclusive to the OME/886 setup.

My take on THAT is, the 886 is a problem....the common denominator.....that may take a higher end adjustable shock to deal with the stiff rate.

And the 5100's don't "clunk" when they top out but they don't last very long with 886's either. I think a major contributor to NOT hearing as many complaints on the 5100/886 combo is most of the dealers caution people to avoid that setup.

Blue - help me out here with a shock recommendation.

I'm going all in with Bruteforce full plate bumpers with winch. Already have dual batteries in the engine bay. Lot's of weight up front (~300 + lbs) so I'm getting 886's.

I already have 5100's but I risk ruining it with rebound force of the 886's. They are fairly new, so I can get some of my money back selling them.

I don't really want the OME Nitochargers because many on TW have experienced these guys topping out and getting the dreaded clunk.

What shock do you recommend to deal with the stiff 866 spring rate? I'm ok with a higher end adjustable shock (within reason.) Which one?

    Simple OME/884/AAL lift. 32” WP’s
Happens with 884s and 90021s. Replacing with 90000s solved the problem. The 90000s have better valving IMO.

They 5100s will be fine. Just set it on the lowest clip and dint preload them. The rear is a different problem. They are too short for the lift. You can get the 5100s from a tundra to extend the drop but then you will need bump stops for sure.

this is a bit off topic but why do second gen shocks have that thin bar/tube on the bottom of the shock? why don't they just extend the body all the way down to the eye? seems like every shock I've seen with that little bar breaks right where it meets the body, is it to clear the cv or something? doesn't seem to make sense to me

Ok thanks. I'm sticking with the front 5100 set to zero. Already ordered extended length rear Bilsteins.

I am thinking about a similar setup. OME 881 (don't plan to add winch etc...) and 5100's in the front with 5125 in the rear with either a new leaf pack or aal. My truck already has the ride rite air bags. Will the air bags suffice for the bump stops?

I just had the local 4x4 shop install my 3" lift. 886 coils, Dakar rear leafs, SPC control arms and 5100s all around per their recommendation. I expressed my concern with this combo but they said they have done allot of Toyotas that way and it works great. So far I love the ride. They actually talked me out of paying extra for the nitro chargers because they said it won't ride as well. Need to get it off pavement for the real test though.

While I'm thinking about it. Wouldn't the spring rate for the heavy duty 886 coil be similar to the 885/887 as long as it has all the extra weight from the heavy bumper and winch holding it back?

You brought a very old thread alive sir! haha but you are correct and I actually ran this setup with the 5100s up front with the extra bumper and winch and I love it!
