Ya, spring under... The springs mount on the underside of the axle instead of on top. The shape of tacoma frame just doesnt allow for very much up travel without a lot of lift. Which is fine for soft springs (like i have) and slow speeds because theres a ton of droop. But any high speed or medium speed bumps or whoops and your banging the bumpstop on the frame the whole time.

DMZ makes a pretty cool kit Id go with if I ever redo the rear

Looking into a leaf pack for my DCLB OR. Have an A.R.E shell and have built out a sleeping platform in the back out of 3/4 inch ply thats making the rear sag a bit. Seems like a lot of people like the OME HD Dakars. I'll be having weight in the bed 100% of the time with my sleeping/storage setup and am wondering what you guys recommend. Total noob when it comes to suspension mods. I'd like to try and keep the feel stock, but would also like a couple inches of lift to eventually get some bigger tires and have a little more clearance when off roading. Thoughts?

I'm looking into redoing the rear. Well, the whole truck with a frame swap from my 97 to a 98 DC frame. I'm getting ADS suspension all around and am debating extended or long travel up front. These rear ends can't get more than about 10" of travel without bigger mods, so I'm just looking to get a standard aftermarket leaf pack.
I'll have around 400 extra pounds in/on the bed at all times and will increase that for trips with at least another 200-300 pounds of gear.
Dakar seems like a nice bet since it's affordable and sturdy.
Deaver seems like it's better match the performance suspension but it'll be like 10 thin leafs thick to hold weight like that.
Looked breifly at the expedition pack but it isn't super intriguing since I haven't found as many great things said about it.

Will I be pleased with the Dakar or should I "spring" for the deaver?

If I am running no additional weight.,, Deaver or Dakar? 6112’s and 5160’s in rear.

I went with a spacer in the rear....least impact on ride quality.

    Rides great. 6112's and 5160's.

thats what I have now actually...factory leafs with spacers but occassionally I haul a dirt bike on a tow hitch carrier, and even my camping gear weighs 2-300 lb. Wondering if I should pull the trigger on the dakars, I;m kinda leaning that way but then struggling to decide between medium and heavy versions

You'll get a stiffer ride when you are not hauling anything...unless it's bad with spacers I would leave as is.

If your dead set on dakar, go with the HD for that amount of weight.

I think there are better options...any of the other three.

I only have experience with the old dakar and dakar HD before I went to a custom alcan pack but I am extremely heavy now. Dakar is in my mind the budget lift option if you're not planning on running more than 600lbs and arent expecting more than 2 years out of them. I just don't think they last and have heard enough anecdotal stories about sagging leaves in the past year that I am convinced their quality has taken a shit.

If you were my friend, I would try to talk you out of them.

The Dakar HD Exp w/AAL set up is a decent pack, they ride nice once they settle in, and have decent flex.
I generally haul about the same weight and have for 4-5 yrs now, they will slowly flatten out as it seems to be hard to marry flex and lift without one or the other suffering. That said, as I also have 883 coils up front my truck stays basically level until I hook up a trailer and have weight on board as well.
I am planning to order a Vagabond Drifter next fall, and will be adding an Icon progressive AAL -going to go with some longer u bolts and try keeping the overloads to see how that works for rake and towing this next summer. Figure to keep that setup for awhile after the drifter installation and rear swing out bumper to see how everything looks and feels, then if necessary I will likely go custom AlCan or get a custom set made at a spring shop in Anchorage.
Of course the rake will improve when I get a winch, but that’s another next year addition.

Long story short, it seems like the Deaver pack might be a good one if you are looking at flex, and ma6be still give you the lift you are looking for. My 49 CJ2A had about 8 skinny leaves in the front and 9 in the rear pack when I was done With it and it flexed like crazy, gained a little lift but not much and I wasn’t interested in lifting it anyway, just wanted to get out in the woods, worked great for that. Skinny leaves aren’t a bad thing, just seem to be bette4 for flexing, to get lift you just get more leaves or stiffer ones and lose some flex.

    Good luck.

Question. I have the heavy pack on my truck. With shell and Rtt plus fridge my rear sat down a little more than I wanted. I was just going to throw the aal in there but I’m finding different numbers but non say which pack they go to. Anyone know if the d29xl is for second gen or first ?

IIRC the d29xl is the AAL for the older cr047 leaf pack for the 2nd gen. Not sure if it fits the newer design.
