    Okay everyone,

I have a bit of a pipe dream of building a custom overland trailer to tow with my 2nd gen. I'd like it to match the width and height of our trucks but I'm on a cross country flight and am having a hard time finding the proper dimensions. If anyone can help out, this is what i'm looking for on a stock 2005 TRD (rough measurements within an inch or two):
    • Width from outer rear tire to outer rear tire
    • Height of the top of the bedside
I'm traveling for work and will have some off-time, so any rough measurements would help a lot. If i can figure out all the pieces of the puzzle, I'll start a slow build thread so you all can make fun of me while I learn metal fab :D

    Thanks everyone!

What did you find when you searched the forum for trailer builds?

IIRC there are some sweet ones around that you might be able to use as models, altering to fit your needs.

I have some of my own ides that contradict the common direction of most builds. i've followed a few build threads and have integrated some great ideas from them and more importantly, have a list of things to avoid. This project, however, has some ideas i've never seen done for any vehicle so i'm trying to sketch it out before i'm back home next weekend.

Thanks, that was a good suggestion. I know i'm in good hands here :D

I busted out the tape measure:
    • Width from outer rear tire to outer rear tire is ~76" from outermost tire bulge
    IMG_1367.jpg

    • Height of the top of the bedside is ~52" from level ground to top of bedside.
    IMG_1368.jpg

    Keep in mind:

My truck is a 2005 TRD OR DCSB

I'm lifted 3" in the rear (unladen) and took these measurement with about 500 pounds in the bedside (getting ready for a weekend camping trip.) Which means the overall lift height is lower.

I have 255/85R16's on stock TRD OR wheels @38 PSI cold pressure.

Thank you so much! Keeping your mods in mind, this is a great starting point.

    No problem.

See my edit on track width.

    It’s 76” NOT 77”

    Just an idea:

The trailer I was building awhile back was slightly narrower than the truck and, on most turns, would track right in the tire tracks of the truck.

Your usage will determine if this is a desirable characteristic.

Wow, that's good info. I might have to follow up with you on that once I get into the finer details.

I was building off of an early Toyota pickup bed/ rear frame/ axle. I had 1.25" wheel spacers, 2nd gen stock steel wheels and 255/85/16 tires to match what's on the truck.

There were too many issues with the donor I was building off of. I sold it last fall as a firewood trailer.

Awesome, thanks man! It's been a bit, sorry about the slow reply. I got a ton of good sketches and ideas down, now it's a matter of actually making stuff. Let's hope I have some spare time this winter :)
