I'd rate it an 9 based on my lack of experience behind the wheel of anything with more power lol. Drove a v8 silverado as a rental once. I enjoy the Taco. I can get up and go when I need to. I even loved the 3.4l v6 in the 1st gens for a double cab...fun to drive to me. I don't tow either.

I feel like first gear is very low in my auto and is super tourquey. If i was climbing a hill in auto low gear i would think I could easily spin the tires. I have a prerunner with the torsen diff so i have all the power going to two wheeels instead of four and have less drive train loss too. However I came from a 99 civic si so....

I would rate about a 4. When I 1st got the truck I thought it was slow as shit, probably because I came from a trailblazer ss with a corvette engine.

Id say a 7. its pretty good but it just doesn't have the power to really pass people quickly on 1 lane highways or tow uphill. Guess a supercharger would solve my problem.....

I got my '06 with the (lower) towing final drive ratios (you would want to do the same), and the TRD OR package (no bogus hood scoop, but that was the next trim level option), and the 6 spd. manual trans. I don't know what the final drive ratio is, but I'm sure somebody will. The engine is friggin' awesome. It will cruise up Vantage Grade (6% x 15 miles) in 6th at the 70 mph speed limit...and able to accellerate without a downshift. It's been to 5,000 rpm in 5th (120 mph) and was still pulling well. I'm running the stock size tires, and find them to be perfectly fine. Remember that bigger tires cost more, eat more gas, ride worse, and are worse in snow and ice. Plus, I don't need a step ladder to get in! :)

7 - For normal driving it is ok, but if you need to use it as a truck (haul any weight or tow), it is lacking.

I'd give it about a 5, it is about equivalent to my Ford Camper Van that has a 5.4 V8. But these are not cars.

I would say it's a 6. Manual transmission on these trucks is not the best setup at all.

Both are not that spectacular. S/C does help but in the grand scheme of things its still slow.

satoshi mod, sliders, tinted tails/3rd brake, 3" lift,
id say its decent. nothing that i would really complain about prob a 7. ive got winch, plate bumpers, skids and sliders and 33" tires too. i can do 120-130 no problem on the highway, decent in the mountains but nothing spectacular.

at the same time i bought a truck for a truck not a car. i also didnt buy a diesel or a V8 tundra. i also didnt pay what one of those would cost.

for those with the v6 tacoma that cry about lack of power maybe you should have bucked up and bought a tundra with the 5.7. just my 0.02$

I think for the Tacoma it is an 8/10. I wish it created a little more torque at lower rpms, but it moves pretty dang good at 3k plus. It also doesn't sound like a loose bag of screws at those rpms like the Ford 4.2 V6 I used to own did.

Edit: I will also mention that I've never owned a fast car, 4.6 V8 Expedition, 4.2 V6 F-150, and a 1.7L Honda Civic prior to the Taco. Most powerful car/truck I've ever drivin was my Dad's '04 F-250 with the 6.0L PowerStroke. Loved that engine despite the issues it had.

Compared to the stupid fast cars I have owned and my motorcycle about a 2, but based on the reasons I bought it and the big tires I have I would say about a 6-7.

I feel like my 07 T4R with the same (size?) engine had a bit more power and was smoother. Does anyone know if the engine and trans in the 4Runner and Tacoma are identical?
