EDIT: My 04 T4R seemed to be the same as my 08 tacoma. I agree the T4R was smoother, felt a little bit quicker, shifted harder at WOT....

At that time they were. I think the T4R accelerates smoother due to it's linked rear with coil springs as opposed the the leaf springs on the Taco which absorb a little energy.

I came out of a modified WRX into my N/A Tacoma, so I may be a little bias but I would rate the trucks power as a 6/10... That said, it has more than enough power to get where you need to be or where you want to go.

Add the TRD supercharger, and crank that power level up to 8 or 9 out of 10 :D

I give it a 10. Its a big improvement over the old v6. Digging the 5spd auto but I've driven a 6spd before. The torque delivered and I'm sure with the new found 07 my bro bought it will utilized very well for his needs.

Youre obviously not boosted... my truck is quick, but certainly not blow your skirt up kind of fast.

I feel like the truck is quick enough. 2wd access cab. That is as light as it pretty much gets with the V6

You don't even need to drive a tuned oil burner to note the difference. I just got a new 4.0L Taco after selling my completely stock 6.6L Duramax 2500 GMC. The difference in go-power between the two is immense. The big diesel just... goes. Effortlessly. Even for a 7000(!)lb truck, it just... goes.

So I agree with you: I'd give the 4.0L a 4 at most. Though as a few others have noted: context is really what's needed. What are we comparing the Taco's engine to? Other trucks? Other cars in total? Motorcycles?

Totally agree. My Tacoma is underpowered compared to my former 5.9 12V Cummins even when that truck was stock or my wife's Forester turbo. It does what it needs to do but, in my opinion, it's not a powerful engine by any stretch of the imagination. A 4 is tops what I'd give it. I would have like a bit better gas mileage for the lack of power too. The 6,500lb Cummins got slightly better MPG even after turning up the pump/injectors to about 900+ ft-lbs/400HP...

Give it a 7. Didn't really notice power loss with tires. The truck has plenty of power for what it is.

    7. I would love to put a s/c on it... That would make it 9 or 10.

A disappointing middle of the pack around a 5 or 6.

In recent yrs had a GM 3.6 V6 in an suv that Geneated 257 HP, a 2002 Isuzu trooper with a 3.5 v6 that generated 215hp and the Taco that generates 236hp. both were better than my taco

of them all the Trooper had more "get up & go", more guts when towing, & came in handy when pulling other "stuck" vehicles out when offroading. Isuzu must have figured out the whole driveline but it seems that others didn't think so & they ended in 2002 or THAT would have been my new vehicle.

A former British special forces soldier, who asked not to be identified because he still consults on active operations, says he too has faced the Hilux, which he refers to as “the technical,” in both Iraq and Afghanistan. “I’d say the appeal is pretty simple,” he says. “You can’t underestimate the value of having a vehicle that is fast, will never break down, and is strong enough to mount a heavy weapon in the back.”

    So I say an 8

This hits the nail on the head.

Then again my other ride is a 325 lb 68 hp (.21 hp/lb) dual sport hooligan machine that can do 0-60 in about 5 seconds so I don't expect the cage/truck to even come close. The Taco is about .06 hp/lb...

When Toyota joins ranks of the modern v6's that make 290-310hp that other manufacturers have released in the last couple years I think the extra horsepower would make the truck just right, assuming the next revision of the taco isn't any heavier or less aerodynamic....

It's good enough for what it is...a mid size truck.

Doesn't feel (and is not) as strong as my BMW nor as quick as my 450r. My Tacoma is still maybe the best all around vehicle I've ever owned.
