I have a 2016 TRD off-road double cab long bed. I was on the fence between SR5 and Off-road as well. For the type of driving I will do with the truck, the SR5 with an aftermarket LSD would be perfectly fine. The cost difference for me was $1155. SR5 with the Appearance, Towing and Parking Sonar packages (even though I wanted it without parking sonar, but the dealer said he "couldn't order it without it), vs TRD off road with only Tow package. For that difference I went ahead with the off-road. If the price was the $3410 like you, I would have had no problem getting the SR5.

I would keep realities in check. Tacoma is a nice midsize truck, but certainly isn't "badass" on the road.

Every problem that existed with the second gen you should assume is going to carry over into the 2016s, and based on owner feedback, they're all still issues.

Weird transmission behavior, under performing rear suspension performance, vibrations, etc.

Well I have no personal experience with the 2nd generation Tacomas. My '03 has been perfect except that it lacks 4WD.

And I would disagree with you about the badassity of the Tacomas. I think they're the best looking truck on the road when they have at least a leveling kit and some nice wheels and tires.
