Last week or so, I had something frozen over night. I washed the truck on the way home, about 4 or 5 miles, parked for the night, in the morning when I went to take off there was a loud thud, something came unstuck, haven't had it happen again.

There are many days here in Maine that you will put her away wet and it gets cold at night, hope this doesn't continue.

I made that mistake once. Back in the days when I had to put a key into the door lock to get into my car. Learned my lesson!

If it was me the next time it happens I would get under that side of the truck and slowly loosen the petcock on the wheel cylinder ad see if there is any pressure on it. I think it's and abs issue and this would confirm it. Make shore you are out of the way of the fluid squirting out!!!!!

Unfortunately they took the drum off and said everything is fine and sent him on his way. I hope the next time it freezes up that they spend time finding the problem.

I wonder why toyota still puts drums on their cars? I have them on my TRD Pro.

A video they did claimed helps prevent crap from getting in between pads and rotors while offroading.

    Just repeating what they said.

My guess would be some degree of cost. Maybe makes engineering the parking brake easier.

I don't think it really matters unless you're towing a lot and need the better heat dissipation of disks in the rear. I don't have the numbers handing but remember the 60-0 braking distance difference was a foot or two; sure it could make a difference once in a thousand incidents, but generally that little is meaningless.

Edit: Okay, found the test I'd seen. Link: http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2016/08/2016-midsize-pickup-challenge-acceleration-and-braking.html

That engineering claim about being better for Off Road is a total cop out. Why does the Land cruiser and 4 Runner have rear discs if so?

Seems logical, i take mine mudding and light off roading, and have never had an issue.

Are they really market as off road vehicles like the tacoma is? I see them as more off road capable vehicle designed to haul the family around.

Not worth arguing the point. I was just conveying what had been said.

BTW, I believe the current Wranglers are four-wheel-disc.

I would more, but I have a short commute to work (10 mile round trip local) and work from home every other week. Generally, if I go anywhere with the fam, we take the wife's car as the kid's car seat is in there. For weekend adventures we take mine, but general purpose we take hers :(

I'm getting terrible gas mileage for a stock truck (aside from sliders), does that count? lol.

I had the exact same issue occur on Christmas Eve. I gave the truck a quick spray down the day before to get the majority of the salt off before putting it in the garage for a few days during the holidays. I went to move the truck out on Christmas Eve so I could unload my gear from the bed, and found it difficult to move forward. It was not until I hit the driveway that I noticed that the truck would not move forward. The passenger side drum was locked, I rocked it back and forth in 4 hi and 4 lo and was not able to break it loose. Since it was just before Christmas I knew I would not get into the dealer for quite a while so I decided to pop the wheel off and give the drum a few knocks with my rubber mallet. That seemed to knock it loose and was able to get the truck rolling again. I suspected the parking brake cable was getting stuck (possibly frozen) so I did some rolling test stops on my street, slowly engaging the parking brake. It instead would lock up the passenger wheel dead and then after dragging for about 10 ft would come loose again. Made an appointment with the dealer for the next week, they looked at it and said it was perfectly fine. I can only assume that the cable is getting frozen when wet or binding. It has not done it since.
