So wheeling recently i slashed the sidewall on one of my tires, making it unrepairable. The tire place replaced the tire with a brand new one for 80$, i went there wanting a diagnosis and to ask my options but they just swapped on a new one. At that point I had been there for an hour and a half and had to get back to work so I paid and left. I searched on here and the Web , but would like a 2ND opinion from TW. What I got from my searches is that it is OK for 4wd vehicles but not AWD ones, and that using 4wd with a different size tire is ok on dirt. Right now the new tire is on my front end, if I get a rotation should I leave that one on the front instead of rotating it to the rear and causing stress on my rear diff when in 2hi?
The tire in question replaced one with about 1/2 to 2/3 tread , pics below

The difference in circumference is so minor that it will not matter.

That doesn't seem that different. I would say you are ok. I had this happen to me with tires that were about 6 months old. I always buy the replacement insurance...I told my self that one day it would actually pay off. Well it did, free replacement of the damaged tire and then the tire shop bought back the "old ones".
Four new tires, with replacement garuntee, for under $200. At close to $900-$1000 for new tires, it worked out.

I wouldn't stress it, put it on the front with the best looking existing tire.

The pics maybe aren't the best, the tires have 12k miles on them

Even if one tire was bald and another was brand new, it'd be negligible in terms of actual tire circumference.

Should I keep the tire on the front axle? I heard that if it's on the back in 2hi it could cause damage to my diff

Rotate it as normal. Actually, I'd put it on the rear so it wears faster. There's not enough difference to worry about this. Go have a beer.

    just a few things.
I would get one more to match the new one. It depends how your old tires are too tho. If you have one bald and one new tire your steering wheel will never be straight. If your old tires only a couple thousand miles it should be ok.

OMG. You are stressing about something that is in no way, shape or form an issue. It doesn't matter where the tire is it is not going to matter one bit.

Drink a beer and enjoy the ride. I can't believe the things people stress about.

No issue here. Put the tire on wherever and roll. Continue living life as normal. It's all going to be O K. :D

Last time that happened to me I bought 1 new tire and grabbed the spare tire down so that I had 2 tires of the same diameter on the same axle, probably didn't need to do it but felt better about it.
