I've got 27mpg on an 80 mile trip from OC to San Diego average about 45-50mph because of light traffic and I was in no rush, made a little post about it. I've also averaged 24mpg over a 350 mile trip from Mammoth to San Diego but again I was being unusually mellow about the speed and kept it right around 65.

Its really all about keeping the speed down. I NORMALLY average 16mpg even on the highway, but I also normally drive 80mph and accelerate off the line with intention. My last gas tank was 14mpg but I'm loaded down with full bed rack and RTT right now, also been doing mostly city driving.

The cool thing about the third gen is, given the right conditions, you can consistently get 25mpg on the freeway. The 2nd gen could NEVER do that unless it was all downhill. So the swing is much bigger on the third gen. If you drive them like I do you'll get 14-16mpg in both the 2nd or 3rd gen, but if you baby or even lightly hypermile them the 2nd gen really tops out around 21mpgs whereas the third gen with its faux atkinson cycle and two full overdrive gears can get much higher.

Worst tank on my 2nd gen 14mpg, best full tank 19
Worst tank on my 3rd gen also 14mpg, but best tank is 24!

Good discussion! That ECT button mentioned a few post back, has anyone else besides me notice that this truck may get slightly better milage when Ya turn it push it. I am not sure if that pushing it turns it on or off?

My last 5 or 6 tanks have been consistently in the mid to low 14’s. Kinda really shitty. Granted we had that month plus of fridged temps (warming up the truck, lots of heater use) as low as 0 for a few days and like 3 minor snow days with 4x4 used a few times.

My commute is like 18 miles from the philly suburbs to philly, plus running errands and short trips around town, picking the kid up, etc.

I did fill up my tires 2 psi more than recommended last week and noticed all 4 tires were low and 2 of the 4 were really low I’m assuming due to the cold. It does seem that so far this week I’m up to mid to low 17’s granted it has warmed up quite a bit also but now getting cold again, so possibly a combination of better tire psi and warmer temps. Winter blend gas sucks also!

I will add that my very best tank since I bought it 4 or so months ago was 18 soon after I bought it in the fall, an avg of mid 16’s-17’s I think is normal.

I should have checked my psi last month but procrastinated. So my advice is to do so ASAP. I figured 32 is good since 30 is recommended and that extra couple pounds would account for any cold weather loss...maybe?

Edit: I say 14ish mpg is shitty cuz my old 2014 Ram 1500 Bighorn 4x4 CC with like 200 extra horse and a lot bigger motor and a lot heavier averaged 13.3 or so for the year I owned it. And I drove that truck hard and like I stole it (had flowmaster 10’s and it sounded like a hot rod). I don’t drive my taco that hard at all and try to use CC when I can so kinda odd.

When my SR5 only had about 1500 miles on it, I drove from Austin to South Padre, which I think is 350 miles, then back plus a little around town, I was able to get 21.7MPG. That's on a new engine with me (200lb) and my best buddy (360lb) plus a little bit of luggage.

I bet she'd do better now.

My mileage sucks...plain and simple. Close to advertised, but that does not make them great. I don't know how people are getting the numbers they claim. Flatlands, four lanes and only one season I suspect. I baby this truck all over the place to try and improve these numbers and it ain't happening. Here are my Fuelio results for about 1 year of driving. I stopped using the app because it is depressing. Especially in the winter. Truck is basically stock and my daily commute is 5 miles round trip. Not alot of highway driving, especially in the winter.

    28 fill ups
7030 miles (this is what was tracked in the app. Actual ODO was 10,544 when I stopped recording)
    Avg. 17.47 mpg (US)
    Best 21.42 mpg (US)
    Worst 14.64 mpg(US)

Well, with a 5 mile commute your truck would not even get up to running temperature by the time you got to work, any car even a hybrid would not do great on a short commute like that.

Also the numbers you posted above seem on par with what everyone else is getting and actually slightly better, quite a bit better than my avg. see 2 posts up and my commute is 18+ miles..

P.s. - check your tire pressure.

About 19 average with winter fuel and temperatures. I got 22.3 going to Tulsa last week on the turnpike at 80+ with a strong Oklahoma tail wind. Returned to Oklahoma City an hour later into the wind trying to hold at 75 and got 16.9. I have given up using the cruise control on the turnpike because it will immediately gear down to 4th on most hills and run about 3,400 rpm.

I have a <3k miles on a '17 DCOR and I get 18.7 per tank with out ECT, but I get 19.7 with ECT engaged.

Wondering if I am due for a ECU flash to help out?

I live in Colorado with seasons, variable weather, and mountains. I'm averaging 20-21 on every tank and occasionally 22-23 for the past 10k miles. I'm running snow tires now and maybe getting .5 - 1 mpg less. Not much change. Anyone getting anything below 18-19 either has gas sucking mods or drives agressively. In both cases it's a choice not anything specific to the truck (unless there's a mechanical issue).

I got the same thing with my OR for the first 10000 miles or so. The mileage started to get better around 11000 miles and was getting 22 mpg doing highway driving. City driving I am getting around 18 miles per gallon

I live in Colorado as well (Durango and Silverton) with a 2016 Sport. Part of the reason we get better mileage is that we also get less power. At my avg driving altitude I'm getting 28% less power due to less oxygen. Burning less oxygen uses less gas. I have over 20,000 miles with an overall avg of 21.5 mpg US.

Bought mine Nov 2017 and I average about 18MPG+. I've got TRD exhaust, Intake, and a pedal commander module. I've used premium fuel since the beginning and used Stabil360 at every fill-up. I'm by no means a slow driver either.

Yea....shitty fuel milege was one of my main dislikes about the Tacoma...

My Ram Power Wagon has twice the engine, weighs 3,000 more pounds, has huge mud tires and averages 13mpgs
.......and I was getting around 15mpg in the Taco.

    It just doesn't make sense.

Sure it makes sence the v8 is doing less work with more hp and torque its doing half the work of a 3.5v6

I agree. 5 miles isn't enough to warm the oil to full operating temp. The coolant will be hot and cab will have heat, but oil won't be operating temp yet.

That theory in and of itself is flawed prior to even considering that the big V8 is powering a truck twice the size of the Tacoma, with bigger tires, and more wind resistance

I guess that could be true, but the powerwagon also puts down twice the power and torque, the current tow truck im driving is a 14 isuzu NRR powered by a 5.2l 4 cyl. Diesel it’s getting around 11-14 mpg not to shabby considering the ~10k curb weight and 10k capacity but a 4banger in a truck that big is good for flat roads, hills it’s ok, steep hills it loses power quick

If I'm getting robbed of that much power I'd love to see how it drives at sea level. Personally, I've never noticed much difference in power or mpg based on elevation. When I lived in Minneapolis my outback got pretty much the exact same mpg as it does here in CO.
