i've been getting 240 miles to a tank for as long as i can remember.

nothing i do makes any difference. i've been on 3 different sizes of tire and still 240 miles to a tank (mileage measured by gps, not odometer)

265/70/17's, 255/85/16's, 315/75/16's. roof top tent on/off, softopper on/off. my truck weighs close to 6k lbs with all the shit on it.

I still don't buy it. I've been driving for a long time and I've never been able to get better mileage with no cruise control compared to using cruise control. In fact, it's always been the opposite. When not using cruise control I find I have trouble maintaining a constant speed and tend to either get faster or slow down, which tends to lower your mileage, like cruise does when it accelerates uphill to maintain the set speed. I started keeping a mileage log in my car in August of 1980 when I was a seminary student and have done so on every tank of gas that I've bought in every vehicle I've owned since then. I drive to Houston and Dallas quite a bit and have figured mileage both with and without using cruise control and honestly, I can't see a difference. I use cruise because it's more comfortable for me.

I have stretched mine out to 280 miles per tank, don't like for it to get very low.
I have never had the fuel light come on and this is city driving.

    1. I think they may have dicked up the winter blend this year in my area, my mpgs are lower than the same time last year. Granted I have 265/75/16 tires now but the difference in summer blend from last year to this year was only 1 mpg.

    2. Speed plays a huge factor. Last May I got about 25 mpgs going from Gunnison, CO to Canon City, CO because traffic dictated I stay below 50 most of the time (I think it was ethanol free gas too). Compared to 16 or 17 mpgs going 80 on the interstate during the same trip.

You have a good range left when the light comes on. I believe it's 4 gallons reserve. I drove on the highway for an hour with the light on and never ran out.

LOL... as stated by others in this thread, a "tank" is not a standard unit of measure.

    Is it:

    a) when you fill up from 1/4 tank line on the gauge?
    b) when you fill up from the low fuel light coming on?
    c) when you fill up from the E line on the gauge?
    d) when you are out of gas and the tank is empty?

How much gas is your 'tank'?

    a) 8 gallons in tank/ 13 to fill
    b) 4 gallons in tank/ 17 to fill
    c) 3 gallons in tank/ 18 to fill
    d) 0 gallons in tank/ 21 to fill

The confusion will end when you say the "gallons" (or liters) instead of "tank" with your miles (or kilometers) traveled.

It is a 21 gallon (80 liter) "tank" and 99% of you did not run out before filling up, correct?

I drove 1500 miles a couple weeks ago and I had one tank of gas that got me 120 miles up until I had a quarter tank left... it didnt make any sense at all. The rest of my tanks were in the 290-300 mile range. Could just be bad gas

This first reply to the OP's question was the best, IMO.
My mileage just dropped with this cheaper, winter fuel as well.

ive tested this in 3 differant vehicles and will shortly put the Tacoma through the same. on trips going from PA to Florida (roughly 16hr drive) my mileage dropped significantly when using cruise vs not. the 3 vehicles i used were a 2005 v8 awd 4runner...2012 Toyota Camry se 4cyl....and a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with DOD. all of them were 2-4 MPG less when using Cruise vs not. all the trips were takin in the summertime with the cars packed up for vacation and 2 other people in the car. having to fill up 2-3 times (4-5 times with the 4Runner)in the same trip was a great way to compare also maintaining around the same speeds (65-75).

my thoughts on why it does this is b/c when youre in cruise there is constant acceleration to maintain your specific speeds....when going up hills there is sudden 1 or 2 gear drop and acceleration which wouldnt happen if youre controlling the throttle. more than likely the vehicle slows in speed say to 55-50 and you'll slowly get back up to speed without down shifting. this ofcrouse is just my opinion on the matter.

Unless you're driving in very hilly country, you're not in constant acceleration. Unless you're in an extremely underpowered car or truck, on flat or mildly rolling terrain most cars will show very little variation in rpms indicated. I will agree that constant downshifting and up shifting while driving is murder on your gas mileage, but if you try to maintain the speed limit your car is going to downshift whether the speed is controlled by cruise or your right foot. Personally I get really frustrated following a car or truck on a two lane road that slows down 15 mph going up the hill and then speeds back up going down the other side. My last 5 vehicles have been a Ford F-150, at PT Cruiser, a Honda Fit, a Camry Hybrid, and my Tacoma. I've never had an instance where any of these vehicles got better gas mileage with my right foot controlling the speed rather than the cruise control.
