    Hey gents,
When I go to pass someone on the highway it seems I only have the option to "GIVE HER HELL"!
I can't seem to pass a vehicle without waking my girlfriend. Is the engine switching from one of its two modes?

FYI - I don't have the ECT on and I have had the tranny updated.

    I'm also 33 - is it that I'm old!?

    Pretty stock for now
I feel the same way when try to do a simple lane change and pass, I always use the saying it is all or nothing. I'm afraid the person I am passing is going to think I am being a dick because my engine is screaming in their ear when I am passing. And my truck is completely stock with V6 and auto trans.

    Enable ECT.

I just returned from a 2,000 mile road trip. ECT OFF in one direction (same experience as you), and ECT ON in the other direction (much quieter and responsive).

My bad! I did a search of "accelerate" acceleration" and "smooth" but nothing seemed to stand out

I will try that. I'm surprised to read that some even get better fuel economy in this mode.

no man i wasn't calling you out, more-less calling toyota out to fix this. My next vehicle is either a unimog or a new taco and as of right now yota doesn't have their shit together enough for me to get a new taco.

My girlfriend doesn't sleep on road trips, so I don't worry about silly stuff like that.

That's what I do, if I know I will be doing passing and needing power I will drive in S5 with ECT on and it drives so much better.

I got 23-24 MPG with ECT OFF, and 24-25 MPG with ECT ON.

It's a high compression motor combine that with the gear ratio and auto to Atkins switch and there is pretty much your answer

It's more because of the small displacement. Engine has to rev high to get you the torque you need. With the 4.0 you could get that power lower in the rev band and it didn't sound you like you were strangling a cat.

It seems like less than a 3rd of the 3rd gen owners actually test drove their trucks before they bought them.

This isn't entirely true. It has more to do with the design than it does displacement. I don't know shit about this motor but I would suspect its a small bore/ long stroke motor which tend to have the revving characteristics.

I don't know how you people are saying the revving and gear hunting is something new. My 2011 4.0 was a revver and used to hunt for gears all the time on the highway. With the cruise on, it would always kick down and rev to the moon when passing or even encountering the smallest of inclines.
