Been a while since I’ve posted, but need some help. Currently stuck!

Just did the brakes all around the truck myself to save some money. A local shop did a bunch of other maintenance that I just did not have the skill, knowledge, and/or time for, but I am saving about $1000 doing the brakes myself. Anyway, they said that my parking brake needed adjusting as well.

I have watched the videos, read the Haynes, adjusted it - however, with the rear jacked up and the parking brake engaged only the rear passenger tire is locked up. The rear driver still spins (and then also spins the drive shaft).

    I am working on a 2008 6-speed manual, 6 cylinder.

Is this normal? Or did I screw something up in that driver rear drum brake I just replaced the pads and rotors on? Any help appreciated… I have been doing this work at night after the toddler is asleep and I am just pooped and could use some TW help.

That isn't right. Parking brake probably just needs to be adjusted though. On many vehicles putting the parking brake on and driving in reverse will auto adjust it but I havn't done the brakes on a tacoma yet.

On the plus side at the moment you can do extra tight turns to the right offroad by engaging your parking brake ;-)

Take the drum back off and check the parking brake strut and adjuster carefully. I'll bet something is amiss. Is the adjustment the same side to side?

Push the parking brake pedal down and see if the shoes start to spread immediately

    Dang…
Ok, I think what I am realizing is that the cables are not pulling tension uniformly.

Looks like one cable is bound up somewhere. Is this likely in the drum? I guess I'll have to pull it back apart and look, but any suggestions would be really helpful.
bummer, thought I had been really diligent putting that brake back together.

No big deal, just take the drums back off and look at the adjusters

Or try adjusting through the backing plate with the wheel on

It wouldn’t be the adjuster though would it? And by adjuster I think that’s the spinning toothed gear on the top half accessible from the rear port on the drum, right? Sorry, just want to make sure I understand which part your talking about

The parking brake strut is that stiff metal bar that goes between the shoes. It can slip out of place or fall down and then the shoes won't spread. Check to see if the cable end slipped out of the lever. Look at the adjuster and see if it's situated correctly.

Take the drum back off and look, you'll see the problem. Drum brakes can be like that sometimes

Thanks for the help! I’ll pull it back off tomorrow and see if I can diagnose.
