Well us old guys tend to spring a few leaks here and there....

Yep I'm watching Joe's journey in this, as it's one of the common weak spots on these trucks...
Big bag of Cheetos all ready to die on his every word in his mission to not park in the wet spot any more.
As it may be a Journey a few more of us may have to take.

Have not seen too much info out there why the racks fail, nor rebuild kits nothin....

I am on my second rack, my first rack failed at less than 50K with stock P rated 31s back then. I am now at 100K and soon to be on a 3rd rack. Currently looking into this option, very interesting.

    :eek::eek::eek:

Well hopefully you know some tricks on how to change out the rack easier....

    WTF is failing on/in them?

I keep hearing about leaking racks, see pics of dirty wet boots ... then grumbles about the rack and they had to change it....

I've read a little about the Tundra Rack and yeah recently saw that "rack support" system you linked to...

I'm amazed there isn't a "rack doctor" for the 2016 and up ....

Gotta be higher end seals out there for these...

Guess the truck is moving so fast, it's gonna arrive yesterday...

Hopefully it gets shipped tomorrow... Cause last weekend was nice, and I want to install it then.

It's apparently a known issue with Toyota in general. RAV4 has had issues with leaking seals.

No clue what Toyota is doing about it.

Apparently all the reman are garbage as well so not with the time.
I'm considering that option Eugene linked as well. Need something stronger

the fact that kit adds hydro assist, double shears the rack, and supports it with only using a stock rack.

the only thing that’s kinda shitty that I’m unsure about it the use of a larger pump and the ability for the stock seals to hold it.....

I figured Toyota won't do anything as it's a low enough occurrence to not bother re-designing on their part....
plus with some dealers denying warranty if the customer put a lift or even bigger tires on is also discouraging,
and stops the parts going back for warranty analysis and Toyota won't figure out how big a problem it is. ...

I like the support slider idea, it's an excellent band-aid to keep the rack shaft straight to in theory keep the seals in their optimum position.
BUT I'm surprised that there is no info out there or other options.

40 people making Pro grills and nobody is looking at the steering racks.... :notsure:

Mine was denied warranty because of lift. It's bullshit but oh well.

That's because more people care about mall points than actual upgrades.

I still don't understand how mine failed

But there's numerous posts of stock pavement only failing.

If these are failing because the arm is being pulled too far off axis and somehow the inside of the bore gets scored causing the seal failure,
that rack assist device will help with the issue...

If it's just because the seal can't take the pressure of a hard hit.... or something else inside not taking the high pressure... contamination... gremlins...
Well then that rack is not it....

Seems like all the other Tacoma issues everyone has a good handle on what and why it fails and a dozen different ways to fix it...

This issue is just a void of information...

To make matters more interesting, 3rd gens get a power steering cooler. Is it an improvement? Was power steering often overheating in 2nd gens? :notsure:
What gets knocked out of position in this case? LCA cam bolts?

Power steering on the second gens is a issue to and can get overheated. I have read people installing coolers because it got really hot on the trail and they lost steering. I’m thinking tundra rack for me eventually. Shitty you have to get it machined, but considering my stock rack is still good I may be able to get away with a beefier rack for the life of the front steering setup.

Time for lockers if u don’t have em already
Cant wait to get out on the trails and be able to crawl a little more instead of rock bouncing open diffs... When the damn trails open :annoyed:
No idea but it drove home straight (aside from the steering wheel) and the alignment shop didn't say anything when i picked it up
