I'm using a 25 year old hydraulic jack that I brought over when we moved here from Holland. It still works, but when I was jacking up our heavy-as-sin e-Volvo I started to doubt the jack. (Yes I always use jack stands).
The jack is in good shape, not rusted, but still 25 years..... Should I be worried? If I replace it, what should I look for. Costco has a 3 Ton Torin 'SUV' jack for 200 bucks. A DeWalt jack at CT is like 350 bucks (ouch).

Basically I don't know jack about jacks (had to get that in there) - so anyone here has some insight?

Is it bent/ bending and yielding? Has it been overloaded and abused? Hydraulics leaking and not holding up? Are the pivots all wallered out? Do you rely on it when you are under the vehicle (hopefully no)? Is it light and cheaply made?

If no to all the questions above. Its probably fine. If its your only jack though, it is handy to have a second around sometimes.

All questions are 'no', the thing looks and feels solid, it's just the fact that it is old. Although I hear your comment about a second jack (and I always jump on any opportunity to buy more tools :D)

Mechanically it's probably better built than the chineseium jacks sold today. However, the hydraulic oil, seals and O-rings inside degrade with time.

How much of the jack's original capacity are you using? Is it a 3-ton jack?

Do you see any signs of internal leakage? i.e. Does the jack slowly creep lower if you leave it supporting weight for a few hours?

It's a 2 1/4 ton, but I'm pretty sure that's in Kgs as it's from Europe (which would make it a 5 Ton Lbs jack, which now that I think about it, seems very high )
It's not leaking and in good shape, but it is actually made in China, it actually says (in Dutch) "Manufactured in China with Dutch quality control" LOL

I like your idea of jacking up the car/truck and leaving it for a while to see if it moves at all, might try that out.

I tried to name our second boy Elmo Slapshot Baxter, but the wife said no. Can you believe that? I told him that not to long ago, he freaked on her...lmao. He said " do you realize how popular I would be with a sick hockey name like that?"
    I just smiled!

My dad wanted to name me Johnson, like the boat motor....

My mom vetoed that for fairly obvious reasons...
