I know theirs plenty of threads for this question but Im getting a set of Greenlane rock sliders, but I’m conflicted on whether to get the them powder coated or not. They will get some good wear on them so it may just be easier in the long run to just spray can it to touch it up. what do you guys think I should do here

i bought my greenlane sliders raw and raptor coated them with the 2k. so far the coating has been durable and minor chips or scratches can be touched up with a rattle can of the 1k which blends in decent.

Did you end up putting a primer on first or just the raptor coat

i tried to do it right with good prep and the Upol self etching primer.

i raptor coated my front and rear bumpers, rear seat delete, and iKamper Mini roof tent shell along with the sliders and I used around 10 bottles. for just the sliders, you can probably get away with maybe 1 can of primer and a 2 bottle pack of raptor if you know what you are doing. i find the coverage is about half of what raptor's directions say, especially on tubing.

i dont have a pic of the sliders but here is the seat delete...

This looks really good I’ll definitely look into raptor coating I’m Leaning towards just painting them myself especially cause the powder coat will get damaged. gotta save money where I can lol just got a set of new control arms

Depending on what they charge, you may be able to get it cheaper locally. I mean, to prep properly and use good paint, you're looking at probably a couple hundred anyway plus your time. And you'll get a few years before you need to really do anything to them. My sliders were powder coated and, for the most part, are still mostly powder coated with the exception of the high wear areas and underneath that I just don't look at. It's been a few years but they look like they slide on rocks a bunch so :notsure:

I powder coated mine and the problem I’m going to have soon is that i want to make some modifications to them, but i don’t think i can easily fix the powder coat. I’ll probably have to rattle can the spots i modified.
(i also haven’t looked into it yet since its low on the priority list)

I have been pretty happy with tremclad applied heavy with a brush and then a sprayed top coat. Can also use a roller. Usually just buy a quart can and it lasts a while.

when the 1k raptor rattle cans go on sale its only slightly more $ than decent rattle can primer/paint and the raptor will look better and be more forgiving on touch ups. i am confident you could have a solid primer + 1k raptor coat on them for $100 all in. my local powder coater charges around $250 for sliders.

for me the balance of cost vs amount of work vs quality of results favours raptor based on my experience but a decent paint job looks good too. i personally wouldnt bother powdercoating any armor on a truck that wheels.

I used the roll Herculiner for my sliders. The top looks good… nothing is going to hold up underneath if you are going to use them. I watch a video of some people torture testing all bed liner products and the herculiner tested very well. I got 2 quarts for 100 bucks used 1 quarts for both sliders/rear bumper/ front winch plate and my roof rack side plates and still have one quart left. I can re seal the can no mixing hardener and use it when I need to do touch ups

Meanwhile I just sent that video to three of my friends who work at Toyota corporate. "Airbags didn't go off when I rammed a wall. Good job!"
Rattlecan spray painting new sliders yourself takes a surprising amount of labor.

I suggest getting them powdercoated initially. For touching up trail scars on aluminum, you'll want to fill the divots with JB Weld, locally sand smooth, then rattlecan semigloss black.

Thanks for all the help guys! pulled the trigger on a set of bare aluminum greenlane sliders I’ll keep you all posted as to when I get them and what products I’ll tackle the painting with.

Since you are going with aluminum, a rough scuff and some spray or brushed on tremclad will do the trick. Could even leave them raw but ensure any aluminum/metal contact is coated with something to prevent galvanic corrosion. The aluminum will rust out if it gets a current or something or other. Haven’t had issue with my flatbed or any other aluminum on the truck with panels and what not.

Based on the fact that it’s already July and other current distasteful economical decisions I going out on a limb here and guessing there is no Silver Lake Canadian invasion happening this year?
