Can this work as a walkie talkie also? Whats programming? I tried to watching videos and it’s like in a different language I have no idea what they are talking about. Can I hit a button and say 10 4 rubber duckie. I was watching the jets take off at Pearson today and everyone had these.

It could be programmed to pick up on gmrs or two way. I tried to get my ham license to understand that stuff but it was too much for me to get into. I think @jordi992 had some info about these the last time I spoke to him about these being programmed at the Guelph cars and coffee.

    I bought a Wouxun KG-905G with the GMRS channels pre-programmed: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/225883136520

But eventually I went back to the orange Cobras because they're simpler to use.

I recommend the Quansheng uv-k5 but for some reason they are not on Amazon.ca anymore. It can do GMRS, Ham, and listen to CB radio. USB C recharge
I believe the Retevis RA79 is a clone of the Quansheng. Check Aliexpress i see lots there https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006149381286.html

OR BaoFeng UV-5R, you will see a lot about these online too, but my experience they have pretty poor internals I think the Quansheng sounds better. cheaper option, easily found on Amazon.
    https://amzn.to/4p2rWTF

They don't come programmed for GMRS, but its really easy to program them lots of videos online.
you will need the programming cable they are on amazon or Aliexpress too

Or go all out https://midlandusa.com/collections/mxt/products/mxt275-micromobile-two-way-radio you wont find one in Canada.

Sharing a couple of pics near the Talon Chutes on the Mattawa River. The temps averaged 10-15 degrees and the weeds were tall, so not many fish were caught. (Every other cast was followed by "I'm hung up, again...). Even the locals said the fishing was poor, that the walleyes hadn't been biting, etc. Still a fun week and caught some smallmouth bass on a flyrod.

Nice spot and nice weather. Is there still a fire ban?

@jordi992 i ended ordering the Amazon special. I tried to order the one you recommended on AliExpress but it wasn’t available to ship to Canada. Thanks for your help.

That’s sucks about the fishing. I was catching all weekend. Here’s my two biggest ones of the weekend. The last one is the river monster in the lake.

I saw several campfires so guessing the ban is over.

That's not really how that works. It could be over but it could also not be and people just don't care. I mean, you're not supposed to leave trash on the trails and we see how that goes.

Check the Ontario forest fire map. Most of the areas where we camp/wheel were de-escalated from "extreme" to "high" recently. Fire ban was lifted in Whitestone a month ago. Fire ban was lifted from Trent Lakes just a week ago.
