Kinda off topic about toyota stuff...

Anyone have advice for a first time renter?

I’m looking at a few condos and apartments in Thunder Bay right now with my girlfriend and we’re both kinda lost. We found some in the 900-1100 area which is par for the budget. She’s gonna be working full time and I’m gonna try to do part time while in school. We don’t have any jobs currently lined up but she’s applied, I’m going to wait till we get up there.

Any advice on things that may not be obvious - things that you wish you had known before renting?

    This shit is scary...

I haven't rented but bought a house. Know all the details of what you're getting into like fees or extras above rent. Just sit down and do the math and make sure it's affordable, know what you guys make vs. bills. You'll have to be disciplined and try to stay on track and you'll be fine.

Thanks! Appreciate the advice. Wish we could buy a house and skip the renting but it’s just not viable with me being in school :(

My spending has been off the charts since joining but luckily I haven’t touched savings! I’m trying to be a bit more restrained and am only spending money on required maintenance now. But damn is it tough to resist just chopping shit up and fitting 40s

    You're on the right track.

Another thing is try and have minimum 3 months of bills worth saved that you do not touch. Only for emergencies .

Avoid basement apartments. They can be damp and cold and might not have a window that you can escape through in the event of a fire.

Also, don’t do what a buddy of mine did and rent over a busy pizza restaurant. Sure, it was great in January and February, he didn’t need to turn on the heat, but by the end of March it was too hot and he moved out. The restaurant’s oven chimney ran up the wall of the apartment and made the place a sweat box.

Haha that sounds terrible. The ones we found are single bedroom student housing condo units 5 minute walk from my campus so I can walk to school and she can drive to work, should be a good setup and the price is right. I just don’t want to get into it and realize I overlooked something important.

Just another piece of advise from an old guy....

If your ceiling is someone else's floor....set your goals higher.

Water is included rest is extra. Free outdoor parking spot so we’re good. I’d assume no mold but we’ll take a look
