Yup this. I'll occasionally go into 4Hi while driving straight on a city street (around 45MPH). Just disengage before you turn and that'll keep the innards lubricated.

Just driving 5 miles won't break anything, but don't make a habit of it. Especially if cornering, parking etc. I've told the story before, but in my younger days I owned a 1975 4X4 Jeep truck that used vacuum lines to lock into 4X4. It was full time 4X4, but with a center diff that allowed you to drive on the road, you could lock it into true 4X4 by turning a switch if needed. At some point before I bought it the vacuum lines had gotten reversed. While the switch was not in 4X4, the vehicle was. I had to get the transfer case rebuilt twice in just a few months before figuring out the real problem. I was smart enough to know not to engage 4X4 on pavement, but not experienced enough to realize that I was in 4X4. Once the problem was solved it drove so much better and gave no further problems.

I do it all the time. My side street is icy, the main roads aren't so much. I sometimes just leave it in 4 Hi for the whole trip instead of switching back and forth when I'm on main roads and side roads. Family has done this with Toyota 4x4's since our new 4-Runner back in '92.

I know this being the first full winter driving I've noticed my UG gauge went from an average of 16mpg to 15.2. But I also went from the stock Dunlops to Duratracs in 265/70/17. I use 4 Hi liberally in town.

Edit: Also only have 4.5k miles on the truck, so not a large baseline to run off of.

At least yours will come out of 4wd Low.....Mine's stuck, will not pop out of Low for nothing...Not even trying to, no clicking of the transfer case either....Just called Toyota Care for a tow to my local dealer.

This might shock some, but I use 4x4 regularly, on dry pavement, completely intentionally, AND I don't feel the slightest bit of guilt over it. The only guilt I feel is for spending too little time in the woods.

If I spent more time doing the driving I bought the truck for the 4x4 would be used often on dirt. Because the truck ends up doing a lot of commuting to and from work, the 4x4 doesn't get used enough. Stuff breaks when it's not used. I do steer differently when on dry pavement.

No issues at all with wear on the 4x4.
