    Riddle me this....
My gear code is A04A. Indicating open diff. Truck is 09 sport purchased in 08. My mechanic (toyota mech.) says it is mechanical lsd and showed me on lift. Spin one wheel and the other turns in same direction. Hillbilly dirt road test also says lsd. It's got two wheels throwing gravel. There is no indication of brakes doing any of the work sound wise. What do I have?
    Quarantine boredom.

There should be a sticker on the diff that says to use LSD additive if it is. Of course it couldve fallen off by now, but my 06 still has its sticker.

I dont think theres a button for our LSDs as they are mechanical. Theres nothing to activate.

Pretty sure they changed to open diff + electronic/"auto-LSD" in 2011 or 12

With the truck running, press the trac off button to the left of the steering wheel. If a yellow "LSD" indicator lights up in the gauge cluster you have the electronic LSD

Yup, look for the sticker on the pumpkin, easiest way to tell that you have the mechanical LSD. My '08 Sport has it, I think they transitioned to the electronic sometime in '09?

Sticker only says check manual for proper oil. I have a lsd light on dash at startup. Is there a sound with auto lsd? Abs type sound? My buddy's 2013 has sound and engine modulation when he starts spinning. Mine does not. It certainly functions as I would expect an lsd would. My last 2 trucks were open diff - I know how they behave. And the wheels turning same direction while on the hoist? My mechanic was certain and refilled with lsd additive. Just curious is all...

So I thought because both tires would dig in gravel snow I had a lsd.
Get one on grass or dirt and one on pavement then see if they both dig.
Mine is open and wheels turn opposite direction in the air.
The lsd additive wont hurt mine has it in it and I’m open.

only 05-08 trucks can have a mechanical LSD. (typically seen on the TRD SPORT ans SR5's optioned with the mechanical lsd)

08 was the last year of the mechanical LSD in the Sports so that would make sense if it was made in 08... Maybe the first few 09s made in 08 had them too
Use an lsd additive for it when you change the diff oil. Won't hurt anything if you don't have a mechanical LSD

All new under the floor, factory frame swap. Bucket seat swap. Bilstein 4600 shocks and X Runner rear swaybar. 4:10 DIfferential. 225/60/17 on Sienna 5 spoke alloy wheels. After market black headlights. OE replica fog lights. OE Intermittent wipers plug and play. Leather steering wheel (OE eBay) that came with a cruise stalk, I bought the $38 OE wire to plug into the clock spring, plug and play.
What the mechanic showed you on the lift is the only info you need, that can only happen with a mechanical LSD, pretty simple. You can ignore a lot the crap above this post, other than the possibility of an LSD lube indication sticker on the diff. There are no buttons or lights that "make" a mechanical LSD work, it's just there. You may, somehow, have a truck that also the "Auto LSD" electronic system which is purely digital and done with the ABS system. A mechanical LSD was optional on TRD "Sport" models, always with a 3.73 ratio. TRD "Off Road" is an entirely different situation.

The above post is correct. Both wheels turn in the same direction is a clutch plate LSD.
