My Tacoma is currently my daily but here is what I think about when I weighed the decision I made to buy now instead of waiting:

(Warning: I tended to rabble and repeat myself /shrug)

If you want do any kind of modding or you plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time then don’t go for paying for extra features you may never use. You won’t miss what you don’t have. However, if you want to lease or trade in within 5 years go ahead and get the upgrades. Chances are you aren’t interested in any big/major QoL mods and would rather have them OEM for convenience.

Power seats - one less electronic I have to cough up $350 to replace in 15 years

Cameras - probably going to mod a front camera, don’t care about the rest

CarPlay - probably going to replace my head unit anyways

Headlights - also probably going to replace those

Was going to wait for 2020s, walked into a dealership with minimum research and was offered a deal I couldn’t refuse. Granted it’s a lease because I was on the fence about it. I figure if they offer to swap me into a 2020 because they want my 19 back early then maybe I’ll do it. I could also hop into a 2022 when my lease is up and who knows how many extra features they may add in by then. But after 2 months with a truck I’ve wanted since I purchased my last vehicle 6 years ago I honestly couldn’t be happier.

Only thing killing me is my OCD and wanting it to be “2020”

The major thing I wish I had that I don’t is the locking rear diff/crawl control, but I’ve never off roaded before and if I do it won’t ever be intense enough to warrant having those. I also didn’t want tech or premium since I’m switching out most stuff anyways and that was the only way I could get paint matching wheel flares on an OR.

My final opinion: buy a sport, get the skewp and put some lights in it. Swap out the suspension if you plan on going off road, stock sport is a bit stiff but not terrible. I feel like the electronics they will be adding are awesome but then again I want to keep this truck for 20+ years and I’d rather have things that are inexpensive to fix after that long. I’ll buy my truck out for a sweet deal as part of my lease agreement. Save for 5ish years and drop a nice pile of cash on a 5 series with all the bells and whistles. Then really deck out the Tacoma for weekend fun and enjoyment.

Sounds like you already talked yourself out of needing a 2020.

The rear locker is useful if you off-road; crawl control is a gimmick. I used both last week, the locker is cool; crawl control makes so many painful groaning noises you will use it once and never again.

If you put it in 4-L and hold it in 1st gear it will crawl without causing such racket.

I really wanted to wait for a 2020 and after talking to the sales guys I realized that the reasons I wanted to wait for a 2020 were nullified almost entirely by my choices of mods I wanted to do. Except for the OCD of it being “2020” lol

I live in Florida so I feel like the rear locker isn’t necessary when most of the off roading I’d be doing would be pretty damn flat.

My mom helped me purchase a Mazda3 back in July 2013. I’ve wanted a Tacoma pretty much since. At the time though I was 19, just started my first part time job making $8.50/hr in June, and no established credit. My mom told me she’d put $XXXX for a down payment and I’d have to find a new car (she didn’t want to have to help me with any difficulties a used vehicle might have) I could get for less than $250 a month after the down payment. That wasn’t gonna happen with a new Tacoma at the time.

April 11, 2019 ~11:30am I wrote Chase bank a check for the final payment on the Mazda, ~5:30pm that same afternoon I drove off the lot with a brand new truck I’ve wanted as long as I’d had the mazda

Don’t worry. Your need for it to be a “2020” will go away in 2021.

Lol for real. At least ours have had the same tech a couple years. Maybe the new 360 cameras will get recalled due to spontaneous combustion since it’s new tech. Something always happens when they do mid gen refreshes

I was going to wait, but for similar reasons I got a 2019. Power seat is honestly the only thing I wanted from a ‘20.

I don’t care about the power as much as I just wish I could adjust the height. I’m just going to buy 1” risers instead though. Power seats are just gonna add 10-15lbs and only get moved a dozen times in 10 years. Then the motor will burn out and it’ll be stupid expensive or you’ll struggle to find a used one to replace yours

I was going to wait until 2020 for the Android Auto. In the end I caved. I figured whatever I bought would be outdated technically within 3 or 5 years anyway and just wanted a damn Tacoma RIGHT NOW.

I can always replace the head unit down the road. The rest didn't matter to me.

My thoughts also. Who knows if apple and android will be around or relevant 5-10 years down the road. I’m sure it will but it’s not guaranteed

Electric motors are reliable, I don't see the seat having any reliability issues.

I agree they’re reliable but I trust manual seat adjustments through a period of 15-20 years over an electric motor. It’s just one less thing to worry about imo. Cab floods while out mudding? No problem here

I get what you are saying but think you will have other issues long before a seat motor burns up.

I agree. And don’t get me wrong I’m not “anti technology” in vehicles. Like I said I’d love to have my truck for fun and then a nice decked out BMW for the tech and comforts.

For someone who wants creature comforts right off the lot it’s best to wait another 4-6 months for a 2020, or better yet wait another year so they’ll be good deals.

From all the reports, you won't have to add cameras to the 2020, with the addition of the Panoramic view and MTM

Owners of any 2016-2019 Tacoma (3rd generation) would be foolish to trade-in for a 2020 model. Take this time to pay off your truck and wait for the all new 2023 4th generation Tacoma. Auto manufacturers like to “refresh” models to help keep sales going for another 2-3 years. The next generation Tundra and Tacoma are will share one platform and the Tacoma is rumored to have a 4-banger Turbo to help increase the current dismal fuel mileage.

I have a 2012 and am waiting for the 2020 which I will order as a DCSB Sport, in MGM and 6MT. Here's why with comments for each of the updates:

    - The power seat option - man, at 6'3" I'm sitting on top of my current truck; I want the tech package which I understand HAS to come with a sunroof.
    - LED headlights - its about time, my current lights are adequate at best and I'm not much of a retrofitter/headlight unit replacer
    - Apple/Android - a nice to have, but not a must have; I find it annoying that these have to be wired to a phone to work
    - 8" screen - a VERY welcome edition. My current 6.1" screen is fine, but is low-res, too small and outdated
    - Keyless entry/go - again a very nice to have which you don't think about until you have it

This will be my daily driver/dump run/do everything truck, so I'd like to have it kitted out with the stuff I want as I plan to keep it for some time.

DISCLAIMER: I do LOVE my '12, but I think its just time for an upgrade.

Wait for the 2020 to land then pickup a 2019 they’re trying to sell to make room for more 2020 models.

I can understand that viewpoint completely. In your case waiting a couple more months isn’t as big of a deal but the benefits are that much more significant. I love the idea of having a vehicle just having everything I want right off the bat but I also like the idea of picking and choosing what I want to add and paying 20-30% less while also having more options when I do.

I will say my favorite feature on my moms 3 series is the driver profiles, especially the fact the power seats adjust based on who’s key is being used. But ain’t no one allowed to drive the taco but me so no reason for the seat move unless I’m vacuuming!

I’m just disappointed that the manual seat adjustments in the Tacoma have a damn lumbar adjustment but not a vertical adjustment. That doesn’t make sense to me lmao

Definitely didn’t want a sunroof on the taco. Never used it on the Mazda, nor did I use the dual a/c. What I miss the most is the BSM, but I did the Rav4 mirror swap and they work just as great if not better. Leather seats was just kind of an “eh” because it’s FL and I’m not trying to die every time I get in my vehicle. Then I discovered the clazzios(haven’t purchased yet but they’re on the list) I’ll be able to get a custom set of leather seats, protect my original interior, and only pay 1/3 of the price it would’ve cost me to get the package with leather.

Woah woah there cowboy “twenty-twenty” sounds much better than “two thousand two hundred and twenty two” or maybe “two-two-two-...two?” Lol

That’s where I was finally convinced. They knew I was pretty damn set on a 2020 because I had been going back and forth with them via email and phone for a couple days. When the salesmen finally convinced me to come out and test drive I decided to actually sit down and crunch numbers. After the $3k in markdowns, dealer rebate, and discount from my employer, I ended up getting them to knock off another 7-8% of the original MSRP on top of all that. I told them if they wanted to make a sale that day and not hope I’d come back in 6 months than they needed to price it like it’s the older model just collecting pollen on the lot.

Really couldn’t refuse it at that point. All that more money I could put into selecting adding creature comforts I want and not being stuck with a sunroof.

It all depends on individual wants. I was going to buy one in April but wanted to wait and see what they were adding on the update. The biggest complaints on this site were no power seats (and seating position), no car play, no led lights, and no rear disk brakes. They addressed all of this minus the brakes. I was planing on changing out the radio to get car play and change out the lights to led. I was going to have to live with seat position. The 2020 has everything I was going to change out right after purchase so I dec
