I need one of these tires for my Toyota Tacoma. I am always on pavement, want to run year round and want a tire that will handle Canadian winter snow, and long tread life

Discover A/TW or Cooper Discoverer X/T4
Can you help me with my decision. Is one a progression from the other,I mean has one been improved on the back of the other??

If you have run these please comment, but I really need an idea of which is better of the two.
    Thank you

Consider a second set of wheels and actual winter tires. Blizzak, Nokian, others.

Then something like Michelin Defenders or Bridgestone Duellers for 3 seasons.

You could use 'budget' wheels, take offs from other Tacomas, since folks ditch them every day. The good side (for a pavement truck) would be the other tires are much quieter, smoother and well mannered for the other 3 seasons.

the AT/W will have more grip

    but will last less miles

they are both nearly identical but AT/W has ~2% more bite

in other words it doesn't really matter a lot

Nokians hakka 8's are unmatched in your intended usage. I personally own these tires and it is almost like summer driving. However you will pay a premium for nokians, I payed 216 per tire.

Get the ATW's because they're almost always on sale at crappy tire for 25% off. I ran a set on my old Tacoma for a couple years (though I didn't see much for winter) and they were dirt cheap. I think they were 725CDN installed, balanced, taxes in, for 235/85r16, 10 ply.

I would be surprised if you noticed any difference at all in the 2 tires in an actual real world comparison.

    where about in canada?

Really would recommend having a second set for the winter. Not sure where you are but where I am we get hit with a lot of extreme cold coming off the lake so icing is a big concern.
Otherwise I've heard good things about the coopers.
Personally can't speak for winter though, I always run separate tires.
