I'd pick the Pro just to be different but which one would bring more in an auction 10 years from now? That's the one I'd get.

I went back and forth between the Trial and The Pro ….in the end I chose the Pro, and would do it again.

I was thinking the same.l, initially before I started this thread. But now, idk. Everyone had valid points on the trail.

The bottom line is it doesn’t matter what we think you need to drive them both and buy the one you like the most.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Pro's upcoming 60 K service. That can easily add up to 2K in additional cost.

aside from the shocks, what $2000 service premium are you referring?

    to the OP-
imho, the Pro is a Pro because of the trd tuned fox suspension (think fast on forestry and BLM roads). Looks like the Pro you have picked out might have an altered suspension… not to mention, assuming the truck still has the foxes, the shocks might require a rebuild.
I mention this because you might as well get an OR or the 22+ Trail Edition if all you’re doing is crawling on the trail or plan on other suspension mods.

i totally forgot about the 60k service. Unless the dealer already performed this before they listed but I highly doubt it

Suspension rebuild? I dont know about this. Can you educate me? Feel free to PM me.

i do not plan on doing any rock crawling or anything extreme. Just light to moderate trails, camping etc. and will be a daily for me also.

The TE has the Rear Locker, but no Crawl Control if my memory is correct.

The OEM TRD Pro fox shocks should be rebuilt every so often and when is really a question of how/where you drive. How hot the oil gets, how much dust the seals are exposed to etc. Fox recommends 50k miles from what I’ve gathered, but again subjective to your use case / previous owners use case. For example someone wheeling hard or driving fast on washboard fire roads will need a rebuild sooner than the owner who mostly drives on pavement with the occasional camping trip.

When it’s time to rebuild (shocks leaking oil / performance compromised) the shocks need to be removed from the vehicle, shipped out, and the oil / seals are replaced. Fox can do this, authorized shops like Accutune can do this etc. the dealer can too, but usually much more expensive and more than likely swapping in a set of already rebuilt shocks (less downtime).

I can imagine there are a ton of folks that go way over 50k without issue or noticing the loss in performance.

What RDT415 said with regard to maintenance/rebuild of the trd fox shocks.
So make sure the truck has the trd fox shocks or equivalent. At $1000 for each shock they are what make a Pro a Pro. Otherwise the truck is just a Tacoma with a pro badge on it.
I think your intended use fits the sweet spot for the Pro. My wife has yet to tell me to slow down while on the trail …on road she still whines. :)

Plugs, t case, f&r diff fluid (and trans for severe). Idk what the cost is, but I’m sure it’s a quite a bit if you have someone do it

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned the drivetrain. The Pro is available with a manual transmission and the Trail is not. If the Pro has a manual, I would definitely choose it over the Trail. If they are both automatics, the trail is the option I would choose if forced to choose an automatic, otherwise I would keep looking. Just my preference.

I’d be willing to bet if the pro had a 6MT he would have bought it and not asked for our opinions.
