    wow...congrats on the upcoming kid! scary! but awesome news.

    you cant go wrong these days. all those econo boxes are pretty damn good. but if my wife was pregnant, and was going to be carting a kid about..it may be my first re-visit to buying a NEW car. it would tap into my paranoia..i want them to be in something very reliable.

    i talked my co-worker into a (get this) Hyundai! they love it. bulletproof warranty, and the car has been driven miles and miles everyday. no hiccups.

    we gave my father in law our 2003 camry. wife thought it was boring. i drove it this weekend. what a POS. the front end vibes like the wheels are coming off. and the motor runs a bit rough. i was suprised for sure.

    wife has a 2005 turbo forester. best ever. loud road noise, bad gas mileage..but damn fun, fast, and reliable.

    My Dad has been looking for a car...test drove a ton...Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, etc. He has a '92 Nissan Maxima with 350K+ miles. He said the new Hyundai Sonata was the best out of them all...best car he has ever driven. Plus, a 10 year 100K warranty is hard to beat.

    Honda. Toyota.

    Don't venture into the Acura/Lexus stuff though, lots more $$ and tend to be part specific.

    Really can't give Nissan to much of an endorsment, not after watching 2 of them go down the road in flames/billowing smoke.

    Hyundai ain't bad either. Great warranty.

    Regardless, do the maintaince.

    You might look into the Hyundai Sonata. There are a few 2010's still out there and they are making deals on those left and right since they released the sexy 2011 so early. They are solid cars, plus the 10yr/100k warranty doesn't look so bad either.

    Just noticed you live in Orem, my buddy works at Riverton Hyundai/Suzuki/Mitsubeshitty in the South Towne Auto Mall, he is a mechanic there so if you spot a car there you like let me know and I can have him give the HONEST story behind it. If I were you, I would seriously look at Hyundai before the Mazda3. You can get more car and better reliability for less $$, but that is just my opinion.

    I traded in my 2006 Mazda3 S for my Tacoma. If it had been economically feasible to keep my 3 and get a Tacoma, I would have done it in a second. Incredible little car. Never a hint of trouble in 76k miles.

    Timing belt? Mine is the 03 4 cylinder and was told it has a timing chain, you would think the 6 cylinder would have a chain before the 4 cylinder.

    Wow this is the thread i need to be
    In the last 6 years i have owned

    2004 Mazda3
    2007 Mazdaspeed3
    2009 Toyota Corolla S

    I absolutely loved my Mazda3 it is FOMOCO but still a very nice car for the money, they dont really do the 2.3L anymore and its now onto the 2.5L for the new 2010+ I owned that Mazda for almost 3 years untill the Mazdaspeed3 came out which didnt have much change in body style but did have the DISI turbo 2.3L setup, i ended up selling it back when gas prices where at $4.50 a gallon and bought a.....

    2009 Toyota Corolla S which got me 32-36mpg every tank, even driving like an asshole the new 2009 Corolla came with a new motor compared to the 2008 and below and also came with a HUGE body style change
    It was not a bad car at all and love it for what it was ECONOBOX the Corolla XRS comes with the 2.4L same as the base Camry but i didnt even look into that because i was all about MPG at the time. The Corolla also had plenty of safety options

    If you wanted me to rate them it would be something like this'

    Stlye= Mazda3
    MPG= Corolla
    Performance= Mazda3
    Room= Mazda3 (if hatch 5door)
    Brand= Corolla (Toyota vs Ford)
    Price= they are pretty much dead even per options mazda3 might be a little more

    Value= Thats a tough split because resale value on mazda3 is excellent and toyota is excellent all three cars i sold i DID NOT lose money on if that helps

    Reliability= that is another tough one because the 2.3L was rated top motor for many years straight and then toyota reliability with a whole new motor for 2009

    Bottom line
    If someone put a brand new Corolla and a brand new Mazda3 in front of me with the same payments per month, i would defiantly pick the Mazda3 for the extra cargo room and performance, plus the Mazda3 makes it so you dont feel like your in a ECONOBOX

    Hope that helps a little bit

    Honda V6 engines still use timing belts, but their 4 cylinder engines haven't had timing belts for awhile now.
