I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery and have had it since new. It has 97K miles on it and I drive it like I stole it. I truly beat the thing.

I have only changed the oil and just recently had to put my first real $$ into it. The timing gear cover gasket was leaking and I also did a water pump.

I did have to replace window regulators and door lock mechanics but did it myself and saved a boat load.

We use it in the snow in New England, 3X per week in the sand on the beach down the cape.

I have found this car to be very reliable and would not hesitate on buying another LR and in fact when this thing dies we will get a LR4.

    Good Luck.

I had a '95 Range Rover as my first car. (replaced by a tacoma 2 years ago) It was a gas guzzling, bombproof, tank, slow and drove like a boat on the highway. Off-roading it was very very capable until something went wrong. The air suspension is notoriously unreliable on these things, as is the whole electrical system. Parts are wicked expensive. It was to teh point where I felt uncomfortable taking it on any kind of extended excursion. On a camping trip two summers ago the fuel pump decided to crap out 15 miles up a forest service road. (ony 98,000 miles on the car)
....good first car, but I would advise against it

exactly my point. why would anyone ever buy a vehicle for offroading in if you're afraid (for very good reason) that it's going to break down while you're out in the boonies???

I think all LR are sweet trucks, however, i hope you are capable enough to do ALL the repairs yourself. You'll never want to take it to the dealer, you'll have to sell your first born in order to pay the bill. My buddy has an old defender 90 and can wheel almost anything.
