Have told several people that their kids wouldn't being doing what they're doing if they raise their hand and knock some sense in to em...

That said, I got 'spanked' with belts, closed fists (once), shoes and other stuff- and I won't be going that far with my kids.

i have never gotten the belt imo.. but if you cant spank hard enough to make it hurt, or the kids too old you shouldnt be doing it imo

I got it first time. :)

Exactly what I was going to post.

Kids aren't people. They respond to stimuli. That including getting their asses warmed every once in a while. You do it when you know that they know they've fucked up and had the choice of whether to do it or not. (AKA - Stop running in the living room or you'll break something. *Break* Now you get a spanking)

Second - This is setting them up for life if you do.

Do you honestly believe the police are going to give your delinquent child a time out?

Sure, in prison after they beat his ass with a club for resisting arrest.

The spanker's attitude should factor in. If s/he is spanking because he's angry or frustrated, he may go too far and it's more of a beating than discipline. Some say "It teachs kids it's OK to hit", but what it teachs is that we are responsible for our actions and if we misbehave or disobey, or later in life break the law, there's a price to pay.

I got the belt twice in my life. After the first time all my dad had to do is threaten with the belt and my brother and I instantly became perfect little children lol.

so yeah, spanking is not only OK, it is necessary IMO.

Spanking and Yelling are two very effective tools, both of which can lose their effect or even become abusive if misused. Yell too much and your kid won't stop when you scream "STOP!!!" because there is a car coming. Just plain BEAT your kid and they lose respect for you and start to hate you, opposite intended effects for both. Like most things, in moderation it's VERY effective.

I saw this thing on the news where someone found out a mom was giving her child hot sauce, like Tabasco, instead of spanking. I am pretty sure they prosecuted her. Fucked up thing is she thought she was doing good because she was not "physically" abusing her children.

I think in moderation a little spanking isn't going to hurt anyone, there is a fine line between a little spanking and a beating. A three year old just might need a little adjustment every once in a while, ask me how I know!

    neglect, mostly.
there is nothing scarier for a child than to hear that belt popping through the loops of dad's jeans after he comes home from work after mom tells him what you did. Oh yeah, spanking works, no doubt. I was spanked with belts, hands, paint stirrers many many times as a child and i deserved it every time. is there anyone else here who had to "pick your switch"? i think that's more of a southern thing, but that was common when i was a child. i would get in trouble with my grandmother and i would have to go out to the edge of the woods and pick my switch out, now the walk there and back was psychologically just as bad as the actual whoopin. . . if that didn't make since, the logic behind picking your own switch was if you got a bigger stick, well, it hurt like hell. if you got a skinny one you got your legs tore up, lose-lose.

any "anti-spanking" parents that thinks what i just said is wrong and that it ever made me hate my parents is dead wrong. i have the utmost respect and love for my parents to this day. i never went to school covering up bruises or anything like that. . . and yes, i have also always had and still do say "sir" to my father and "ma'am" to my mother and always will.

^^Yeah, kids nowadays seem to have no rules. You have the older yuppie parent that doesnt believe in spanking and lets their kid run a muck. You have the "I shouldn't of had a kid when I was a teen" mom whos kids run a muck and are undisiplined because obviously mom was undisiplined. Then you have the rest of us with about a 50/50 split on spanking or timeouts. By the looks of this poll maybe more for spanking. I think spanking has to be used in some cases when timeouts and other techniques just dont cut it. We also should be allowed to spank other peoples kids when they are running a muck in public places!! Or at least beat the parents for bad parenting.

Yeah, I believe in spanking, but in moderation. It loses it's effectiveness if used too often. I see firsthand how bratty and undisciplined kids can be. Having said that, I have a scar on my face from a belt buckle wielded by my mom oh so many years ago. I would definitely advocate the hand, but nothing more:)

i used to get punished with a belt by my mom. my parents used to get the same punishment, and as far as i know my grandparents did too. From what i can see my family turned out just fine! There is a big difference in punishment and a beating for no reason. With that said, imo spanking does no good if the child doesnt understand why he/she is being spanked. explain then spank or spank then explain.. just so you get the point across.
