I had to quit using Quaker State Synthetic on my vehicles years ago. It caused marked oil consumption between changes when I would have no oil consumption with other top brand synthetics.
I do agree about the quality oil filter. I did a lot of research on this and am very picky about what I use any more.

Absolutely one of my favorites of his. Love the line, how it's sung, how it leads into the chorus. It also kind of makes me cringe and want to tell "No, no, no ,no!!!" at my stereo, and scream "You don't know what you're saying!".

I highly recommend being consistent on the oil you use for your vehicle. A number of years ago I was speaking to a local mechanic about his opinion on oils. He said as long as you use a good quality oil the brand is not quite as important. However, he told me that when he went through his ASE mechanic certification he said he learned something he never knew before. He said they told the class to NEVER mix brands of oil. There different type of additives and detergents that are used by the different oil manufacturers. They do not mix well with each other across brands.

He went on to say that he was skeptical but they did a test in the shop to prove the point. They would heat different oils to operating temperatures and them ad a small amount (dropper full) of a different brand of oil. He said the oil would almost immediately react and turn black due to the cross mix of additives causing the oil to be compromised. He said "it made this old mechanic a believer".

I used to get whatever good brand was on sale when it came time to change oil on all my vehicles (4 vehicles). Now I get the same brand every time because you will never get all the old oil out of your motor on a simple drain and fill. Even a small amount of a different brand will react and compromise your oil.

When I bought my Tacoma the previous owner had always used Mobil 1 in it. I changed immediately to the Mobil 1 High mileage on it now as it has over 140,000 on it.

On my previous Tacoma I changed from dino oil to synthetic and within a few months started having oil leaks. I didn't know why at the time but later figured it out and went to the high mileage version.

Use whichever brand/bottle design makes you feel good/looks coolest.

That’s about the only difference that matters.

No issues switching to a synthetic at that mileage (or any).

When I lived in Montana and had my 2005 Taco, it saw temps from freaking -15 or even colder in winter all the way to like 105 in summer. Mother Nature up there is a very nasty bitch. I would recommend synthetic in that kind of environment. Most places aren't that extreme of course.

I've been running Mobil 1 Full synth Extended performance 15k mile oil on mine since 90k I change at 10k intervals and honestly could go the full 15k if I wanted to. No issues.

For me that would mean every 2 years for 10k or 3 years for 15!

Confusing verbiage on here... It's either a full synthetic or synthetic blend. Stating the oil you use is "synthetic" isn't clear to me and is doing a disservice to anyone reading this thread.

There are 3 types of oil:
    Conventional
Synthetic Blend (mix of full synthetic and conventional)
    Full Synthetic

The thing that worries me is that bad oil practice isn’t something that rears it’s ugly head quickly. Over used oil will damage things over the span of miles and years.. and then things begin wearing down and you realize it could be due to the oil.

Not saying you are, it’s just my fear. I’d rather change at 7k and have peace of mind. Otherwise I’d be getting annual oil analysis’ done to see if I’m causing damage.

I've heard this too but I don't think I buy it. Think about the average guy that doesn't give a shit about oil, which is most people. He is taking it to whatever place is cheap and/or convenient not paying any attention to brands. If that theory were true then the oil would almost never be effective due to being compromised by whatever was in it before. I almost never hear of engine failure in vehicles in the real world.

As far as the oil turning black in that test, any oil will turn black when exposed to heat, check out project farm on youtube. He tests oil all the time and everything turns black in his heat test.

Conventional oil works just fine and is cheaper. It's far better than the oils of 30+ years ago. It can easily run 10k miles before breaking down, so 5k miles is nothing.

Yes, I fully understand that synthetic oil is better in that it doesn't break down as quickly. Yes, you can probably run it for 20k-40k miles without issue. That's probably not a big deal as long as you change your filter every 5k miles... The filter is the weak point in the whole lubrication system. I haven't seen anyone mention changing their filter between oil changes, so I assume that's not happening. If you're running synthetic oil and changing it any sooner than 15k miles, you're wasting your money... Make use of that top-mounted filter! My preference is to just change it with conventional oil every 5k miles, as I do with my other cars.

Filters are another issue. Any filter you buy at Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, or wherever, is crap for one reason or another. Just use Toyota filters. They have the best combination of filtering, flow, longevity, and price.

He said he's going to stop paying someone else to do it for him and start doing it himself. Seems like a reasonable thing to do.
Put the Mobil 1 in yourself and don't worry about it.

When Mobil 1 Guarantees my engine won't fail due to bad oil, I'd reckon they're onto something. They literally ran it through cars on dynos for 100's of thousand miles non stop and then tore the engines apart and looked to see what wear and why before putting the stamp of approval and that guarantee behind it. :notsure:
Oh look, they increased the mileage guarantee to 20k miles.
    https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants.../products/mobil-1-extended-performance-5w-30/

What the period of coverage is

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance limited warranty is valid for 20,000 miles or your vehicle’s OEM recommended oil change interval, whichever is longer.

Additional requirements for Mobil 1 Extended Performance include: 1) Oils must be put in service not later than five (5) years from the date of purchase; and 2) an oil change must be completed every twelve (12) months.

What we will do to correct problems
ExxonMobil will replace any lubricant that is defective. In addition, if there is equipment failure due to the lubricant you purchased, and the engine was serviceable at the time the oil was installed, ExxonMobil will repair any equipment damage directly caused by a defect or malfunction of the lubricant, at no cost to you, provided that the lubricant was selected and maintained in accordance with specifications of the OEM or the written instructions (which includes product packaging) of ExxonMobil.
