Yep - there was a reasonably priced 50k miles regular cab at a dealership up north but it’s had 2 holes welded and you can see major rust flaking covered in a thick undercoating. I went so far as to call Toyota corporate to check on the warranty status but it had been out of warranty since the beginning of the year. After speaking with a Service manager at a Toyota dealership it doesn’t sound like they make exceptions once that Warranty runs out!

That they definitely don't if you just miss the deadline, I know people who ran into that

    Thanks, Chris:

I have a CARFAX readout on service so I know the truck was first sold September 3, 2008. Its a 2009 Tacoma from New York that I bought from Infinity of Clarendon Hills, Ill. in August, 2019. Coincidentally I paid about 15K for it. Sure, there was a lot of rust but this is Chicagoland so noone blinks twice at rust. Thats what God intended Bondo for, right? Anyhow, I have reached out to the dealership and they have told me the settlement expired in 2019. I pulled up the settlement and it says 12 years. The extended warrentee I have names "Frame" specifically as one thing it doesn't cover. What really makes me scratch my head is that the first owner had the truck in for service every other month and there is no mention of attending to a recall.

I did see that bit about the woman who had a 2006 and missed her cutoff. Didn't realize settlements Had a cutoff. Certainly the rust doesn't.

I was thinking, though. If I have to go for a new frame, there wouldn't be anything special about having a dealership do it, right?

    Best Wishes,

    Bruce

I forget the cutoff but you had to get the first inspection before a certain date..I think it was 9 years in my case of my 2010. If it passed they applied the coating and you got a second inspection within 12 years of first date of use (title/reg/insured, NOT built). I'd surmise your first date was close if not the 9/3/08, but who knows if it got that first inspection even. That could be what they speak of with the 2019 part.

I looked for this thread just a short time after reading the OP, there hadn't been any comments yet. I thought it too difficult to tell for certain how bad the rust was. In my opinion in didn't look that bad. Especially considering a 12 year old vehicle.
If you want rust free, start checking Craigslist Phoenix.

I truly appreciate everyone's thoughts. If I had my way I would probably pushed on but it seemed like diminishing returns.

None of these trucks will be around in 100 years....and I won't be either. I'm old enough to remember Great Lakes Dragaway in Chicago and a lot of those competitors came out of residential garages and not dealerships. Those were the years when cars still had points and four barrel carboretors and young knuckles turned up, less skin, as a regular badge of honor.

Think I'll take my truck over to the local auto body place and get the frame welded in the one spot thats bad---- the rest of the frame is in good shape. I'll wipe down the rest of the frame with Rustoleum Rust Remover Jelly and lay-on some solid under-carriage coating.

    Life goes on. :bananadance:
