i'm new to the tacoma world and in the market for one. i found this one not too far away. it looks clean and straight, though the price is a bit higher than what i've found by entering its info into kbb or edmunds.

    http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...r_id=65504009&car_year=1999&rdm=1281140020639

i haven't seen it in person yet, but am thinking somewhere more in the $7500 range is more like it...assuming it's as clean as it looks in the photos. am i off base on this?

aside from frame rust...are there particular areas of concern for this vintage?

    thanks much in advance!!

The way I see it, frame rust can be a blessing, especially with this truck. On that vintage of trucks they quit making the frames so re frame is out. If it fails, toyota buys it back for 1.5X highest blue book value. You just gotta get it inspected before October 1 I think... If it passes, you got a great truck and you have 4 more years for it to rust out or maybe it never will. Other than that, I think it'll be solid for quite awhile... it's a first gen

    Welcome to the site!

The truck looks real sharp. I don't think you could go wrong with it. One thing that stands out though is that is has 'TRD Off Road' stickers on it, but I didn't see a rear locker button (should be left of the steering wheel and say 'RR DIFF LOCK', if I remember correctly).

    Good luck man!

Nice looking truck and he did state OBO so give it a shot with you $7500.
I don't know if you know how hard it is to find a clean low miles gen 1 4x4 but they are getting rarer.

Nice truck. Looks good in the pictures. Take a close look at it. As mentioned before, doesn't look like a TRD model. Its easy to add stickers but not so easy to add an e-locker to the rear differential locker. Take away value because of the lack of an actual TRD package which included special springs (front and rear) and shocks and most importantly, the rear locker. Another tell tale, though not as obvious, is the crank up windows.

I have a 99 tacoma v6 extra cab prerunner and I love the thing. The price is a bit higher than i paid for mine and that has more miles but its also 4x4 so its reasonable. Things you should definatly look at are the shocks to see if they are leaking and the rear leaf springs to see if they are frowning. with 120K im sure it will need new shocks if the havent been repaced aready. You should offer lower if these things need replacement.

$7500 with 120k miles would be a deal in my area TRD or not its a 4x4 for low miles
and as said before rust CAN be good, im thinking about bringing mine in just to make sure

I like it...maybe I'm a little biased  It's definitely clean and looks taken care of. If you're serious, shoot him an offer. The worst he can say is no and just haggle a price.

Something you might want to check (might be a completely unique thing that happened to me) is that there is no oil build up underneath the oil cap. When I bought my truck (used with 93k), I remember looking at the oil cap, seeing some gunk in there, and not thinking much of it (first vehicle purchase). Anyway, the end result was a blown engine at 164k even though I changed the oil every 3k. Like I said, freak thing? I don't know.

If its as the ad claims, the price is pretty damned good, if you go see it make sure it is a TRD & not just decals, look for the Elocker button on the left side of dash, it'll be marked as RR DIFF. & of course look to see how much rust has invaded the frame & yeah , years 1998-2004 are getting a little harder to find...

thats not a TRD model has nice stickers tho.. you can see in a pic there is no E-locker.

for reference i bought mines from a dealer for bout 6k REAL TRD 4wd pw/pl 5spd with 140k new tires but needed a timing belt to be done still.

bad part about it is it has failed frame inspection. a pain to find another again. most i find are beat. hard to find one used as a commuter car with minimal workload and no football sized dents.
