    has anyone used these? Will the stock rubber boot fit over the bulb with all that junk at the end of it? Seems to have decent reviews in Amazon, thinking of trying it out. Thanks

    unsafe and illegal

    <this is a snip from cpf>
    It is unsafe and illegal to put the wrong kind of light source into a headlamp, and here is why: Headlight beams are not simple spots or floods, they are actually very complex, with intricate requirements for a variety of minimum and maximum intensities at a long list of angular points within the beam.

    The whole optical system (light source, reflector/s, lens/es, bulb shield) works as a system to produce beams that meet the requirements. Each headlamp is designed, engineered, tested, and certified/approved to give acceptable safety performance with one specific kind of light source -- a halogen bulb, an HID bulb, or an array of LEDs.

    Putting a different kind of light source into the headlamp, other than the kind it was designed for, ruins the headlamp's safety performance. The wrong amounts of light are sent in the wrong directions. Some areas have not enough light, other areas have too much light, and the result is very unsafe, each and every time.

    And this is true even if you think you can see OK with your LED-modded headlamps. You really need to keep "LED bulbs" out of your headlamps and put the correct bulbs back in; even if you manage to luck out and not get ticketed, and even if you are OK with risking your own injury, death, and property damage, your modified headlamps create an elevated risk of injury, death, and property damage for everyone you share the roads with, and that's not acceptable.

    First to the OP... I bought a set and one LED burnt out within 30mins after installation. I had a set of LifeTime LED's also and they lasted 10 months. LED technology just isn't there yet for aftermarket consumption. So IMO I "personally" would steer away from them. That's just my opinion though.

    As far as being illegal? Meh... hard to say. The way the lights are set up they aren't much different than a halogen bulb as far as light output / scatter goes. The only difference I saw was a white light rather than the dull yellow. Never once had a problem with anyone bright lighting me or with LEO. It's not like putting a HID kit in your factory housing which they aren't made for.

    no it isn't hard to say. they are illegal. full stop.

    opt-7 has not passed -any- FMVSS photometric requirements to install LED retrofits into any headlight housing, let alone tacoma headlights

    people can choose to violate FMVSS and 'be that dick' that increases risk for everyone else if that is how they choose to roll through life

    in fact every single retrofit or headlight mod on these forums is illegal but
    I am not gonna bitch about every last one of them. this thread was about opt-7 and I posted my option and a scrap about why they should not be considered. that is all, do whatcha want.

    Well.. the same argument could be said for most of the stuff we bolt on to our truck.

    My taillights are technically illegal

    My bumper is technically illegal since it's not DOT approved.

    So... full stop. "Most" of the things we do to our trucks are not 100% legal. As far as the LED lights go... there is no problem using them as long as they work (which they don't). If you want to be a complete stickler to the law then we wouldn't be able to do most anything to our trucks.
