Never understood onstar I mean if you crash your vehicles you are going to usually be able to call for help and if you can't someone will likey see it or come by before too long. Unless of course you are in a very remote area.

It's another thing we give up some of our privacy for a little convenience and the idea of safety.

Something I found in toyota app FAQ’s. Is it true that they are not sharing data? Another conspiracy to solve I guess. Haha

I remember the scare tactic commercials that they had beck in the day. Saying that a phone would be less reliable than the system. At the time, the system was on 2g when phones were mostly 3g. Now, I know on Android, they have an emergency dialing feature if a collision is detected.

Like was said, I just like to have control over it and have built a trust in some areas that I don't have in others.

It might have changed, but I seem to recall folks posting about getting insurance offers based on this score, or maybe Toyota offered to share this score to get an insurance offer? Something like that.

I was considering getting the insurance monitor thing just to see how my wife drives when I am not in the car. She sure scares the hell out of me when I am in it:eek:
I decided not to because I knew my insurance company would for sure drop me.. She literally makes me scream in terror..

"for its own purposes" makes this completely meaningless because it is open to interpretation and their lawyers are better than ours. You know, all the marketing and advertising that Google does, for example, is to improve the user experience (not for their own purposes), right? Aren't they just so sweet.

Not to mention that fact that you probably did provide express consent when you installed the app, visited the Toyota website, or some other dang thing--unless, of course, you read every word of every agreement and don't just sign or click "ok" like the rest of us.

I don't know who did it (Toyota, Sirius, my insurance company, or for that matter the DMV) but in the past couple of weeks I've gotten probably half a dozen little official looking cards in the mail (looks like a DMV renewal card or something) but when you read it, it is about an extended warranty, service contracts, etc., and they all say something about my "new Toyota Tacoma"...so...somebody blabbed.

Just my two tinfoil hat cents.

    It reads:
"Your vehicle wirelessly transmits location, driving and vehicle health data to deliver your services and for internal research and data analysis. To disable these features including the active safety features mentioned below, call 1-833-611-1743."

    5 minutes later this came by email;

To counter this, i think the point is your phone most likely isn't going to be sitting in your cupholder after a major accident. In november I was on bluetooth talking to someone and I was stopped in traffic on the freeway. The person behind me for whatever reason didn't see that we were stopped, and hit me from behind at (guessing here based on speed limit) 65-70mph. It flipped me on my side into the middle of the highway and my phone definitely flew out of my cupholder and went down onto the passenger side window area which was now on the ground. I was fine, and saw the phone, but had I been knocked tf out, I would have had no clue where it went and wouldn't have been able to call for help. I didn't need to call for help bc of many reasons but I could see that being a life saving situation where onstar or the SOS button could save my life. With that said I'm not paying $5 a month or whatever so I'll take that risk. Hopefully "hey siri call 911" works and I'm not in the water sinking lol.

Or you hit a bump hard enough activate the system (with or without deploying airbags because it will) while off road..... then the helicopter shows up.

There was a time when no one on the road had a phone. Police and rescue crews still managed to get dispatched to accidents.

We just had a older guy have a medical incident while driving at 50 mph and went off road thru a building.
Airbags deployed people on the roaday must have made 50 911 call ins.

HOWEVER, the onstar (Ford F150) never was able to call because the roof antenna had been ripped off during the collision.

    But,
I guess if you're a tech geek you have grown to depend on the "system" and cannot breathe without a cell phone to hold on to.
AKA a pacifier to your great grand father.

Harumph. I tried to opt out of everything I knew about, yet recently I got a postcard from the dealer to remind me that my truck was due for its 15K service - this within 400 miles of hitting 15K. Coincidence? I think not

Sorry to hear about your collision.

No, though. My main point was that the cell phone still was functional. Sure, it might not be where you left it, but GM tried to make the point that their system was more robust than a phone. That was BS in the age of the nearly indestructible Moto Razrs and Nokias and even more so now with voice commands and / or emergency dialing built in.

:) I did that too and I also managed to get a discount with Liberty Mutual. The big negative hit I had was going to the airport for an early flight (driving at ~4:30am) and that killed my score. I should have taken an uber.

Well after I called to have it shut off the red/green light by the SOS button now stays off and the DCM signal strength indicator is also off,
DCM is shutdown but everything else still works.
Even the overhead microphone still talks to the head unit with verbal commands.

It worked out, I got a 2022 out of the deal, just took 5 months  I get what you're saying... they always have to make it a "thing" so they can charge more for it. Toyota GM etc should all just have the emergency button be standard and not make us pay for it, you know to do the right thing.

That last bit is my biggest gripe. We could push that button at any time to talk to CS, but they could detect a collision and ignore. That is just not right. I'd rather count on myself. Hahaha!

    Congrats on the new Taco!
