Cool, thanks for the info. So, when they say that "Dynamic Navigation" will no longer work, they mean the OTA updates to the mapping database (there is now a Taco Bell on that corner), right? Like, the expensive navigation SYSTEM I paid for will still work, it just won't be "dynamic" in that it won't update the maps when a new road (rare) or new business (more common) comes into existence, right?

If so then that is fine. I think I even saw where you can get a micro SD with updated map info and install it (not sure how) for like $40 if needed.

    Thanks.

No I think that is when it connects to a call center and you tell them “ directions to nearest hospital” and they automatically upload it to your nav system. I tried that feature out twice during the trial period.

I would have thought that this was "Destination Assist," no? Certainly don't need that.

I struggle to come up with a single scenario where I want to start my truck from anywhere in the world. That seems second in line of stupid gimmicks behind the new Hummer "crab walk" button.

    Great topic, thank you OP.

It ought to be interesting when my Taco comes in and I'm @ the dealer in the process of buying it. I ditched smart phones years ago and use a Sonim XP3 flip phone, before that I used a samsung rugby flip. I have watched people's entire lives get sucked into those stupid electronic tethers.

I will not be using a Toyota app, I will not be connecting any phone to the truck. Hopefully I can just delete the crap on the screen I won't be using, like apple, XM and whatever the hell else is on it.

I have a flip phone as well for the same reasons and having a vehicle that "connects" is not in my interest at all.
Anytime something is "free" and pre-installed is not just for the new owners benefit (if any) but it has great benefits for the connected people on the other end.
If it was not, they would charge you for it from the beginning.

I pay for the connect service too. I can remote start my car from my office before I leave to get it to start cooling in summer time and heating in the winter time. On top of that I get to check the truck’s status in real time (door locked, windows open, etc.) and lock it via the app if I did forget to lock it.
I went to Singapore for about a month last year and I was able to start the car once a week with no problem.
Was also in Italy for a month and a half and was able to start the car no problem.
Not a lot of people will like this feature. But for some, it’s worth it.
So there you go. Stop struggling to come up with a single scenario blah blah blah…
By the way, your truck is 2016, it is not even equipped with remote connect. So why struggle? Take it easy on yourself will yah?

If someone ever has access to your vehicle (mechanic, family member or passenger) in 1 minute can get the password from your head unit and then download the Toyota App.
Then they have access to the same thing you do, start, unlock, lock and see and all the rest of the "goodies".

It's a computer that uses a password, it's that simple to use and abuse at the same time.
Have trust in a system that can, might and will fail is not a secure system.

Why would you give your password away?
Unless you are one of those people who uses 1234 as a password… u can only be stupid as u’d like to be.

Easy for me, these services require a cell phone network that doesn't exist where I work.

Now I see why you’re against it.
As for me, I don’t have to worry about my kids programming my truck.

Just the kid at the dealership who changes your oil.

Good for you, so do I, from the very first one.

I do not think I will be using the two FREE changes by my dealer. Too much wasted time.
It takes 15 minutes at home when It takes the dealer 45 min. to an hour.
Plus I have to drive 45 min of traffic to get there. Add in gas cost and time not doing something productive.

Same with rotation (to be honest I am already wanting to replace the stock shoes anyway).

Facts are, just like a repair facility or the dealership, the senior mechanics are not changing oil and rotating tires.
The new mechanics or shop "personnel" are.

    None.
My Taco spends most of its life lounging in a very rural pole barn in another state while sipping electrons from a batter tender. Somehow, State Farm figured that out and began sending increasingly demanding letters re: location and usage. The SF agent says that my usage/storage is fine … no coverage/fraud worries.

The only way that SF could have found out is if Toyota or their cellco sold my location info.

Opt’ing out took three phone calls as Toyota’s first two center reps were seriously unhelpful/argumentative. Then I received a letter from Toyota Hq reminding me that I had made a poor decision and to please pay them $80 to restore the service.

WRT ODB-II dongles reducing insurance rates … my Miata accumulates ~3,500 miles/year. Reduced rate denied because I “don’t drive it enough.” WTH?

Yes they were not happy with me getting out of the net as well.
They tried to make it sound dangerous to not be monitored.

This is a perfect example of why you need to read the contracts fine print and your MANUAL.

    I have no Toyota Nav.
So opting out in the end it will stop the annoying emails that are trying to be my babysitter and track me. One less entity tracking me and selling / using the data for their gain. I believe I can think for myself.
Remote services will not work well as they are run through AT&T I believe (tried to shut off the WiFi and it displayed an AT&T phone number) and that service is out more than in where it live.
Does not seems as though there is anything to loose by doing so, except some convenience that some may find useful or need.
