So my deliberation on what wheel to get has led me to start wanting SCS wheels, either SR8 or Ray10.

I was set on the TRD 4R pro wheels so I had to go 17. Now that I have a choice of 16 or 17, I don’t really know what the difference is.

I have a set of 16in Toyo MTs so on the plus I wouldn’t need new rubber yet, but part of me wants new tires since I wasn’t expecting the MPG drop with the MTs.

Someone mentioned on my other thread that 17in has more tire options and can be cheaper but I can’t seem to confirm that.

Why did you choose the size you’re at?

Optimal Rim size will depend on the overall diameter you want to run, and what you want more, road handling vs off-road.
Personally if you want really good off-road ability I wouldn’t go to 17” unless you are going for 35” tires. But a 33” tire on a 17” Rim will have way better road ability than a 33” on a 16” Rim. Tire options are also subjective, there are more in 17, but you may not find the size / capability / load rating you desire.

There are so many opinions on these that you should read up and make you own opinion, there is a lot of bad / incorrect info on TW on tire & suspension setups.

I am stepping up to 285x75x17 on 17x8.5 w/4" bs. Will be running a MT type tire. Cooper, Goodyear, Nitto. Haven't made up my mind.

In my head I like to think I’ll use the truck a lot Off Road, but in a year barely done it. I’m
a buy once cry once person so I don’t want to go on with my instant gratification and get burned in the long run.

I think I’ll end up going with 17in since that seems to be a good option. Hopefully @SCSPerformance will have some black 17in wheels in soon. I can get a set of K02s for about 600 till the 31st. Best deal I’ve seen yet.

Why not the Toyo? That’s what I have now, love the look and capabilities but just a tad too heavy.

Toyo is another great brand, just don't go cheap.

16s don't clear the calipers on 2nd and 3rd gens by much. I've seen crap get wedged in between the caliper and the rim with 16's but never seen it happen with the extra half inch of clearance.

    I chose 17 so I could run a C range tire in 285. The 16 KO2 are E range

With what you said above, 17” is a very good option on these trucks. and if going for KO2s (again taking in consideration above) I would personally suggest staying away from E load rating, it’s simply going to be too heavy and absolutely no benefit to you.

I am torn between 16's and 17's too, originally i wanted 16's but... now im thinking someday down the road i might want to try upsizing my brakes so im thinking ill go 17's to avoid having to rebuy wheels down the road

This is also something I am looking at.

    Good price, but cheap wheel.

For an even balance between off and on road performance you should stay around 50%. Meaning the wheel should be about 50% of your overall diameter. This gives you decent road stability while still giving enough room to air down and get a great squat

I second that! I have the KO2's in the C load and love them! MPG's are pretty much the same as with stock street tires and the ride is a heck of a lot better than E load tires too. I had some E load nitto's on my old Tacoma and they'll about beat you to death going down the road.

Yeah I have E rated MTs now and my average mpg is 14.5 in city which I usually drive in. Thanks for the input

Optimum rim size is going to be what the engineers put on the truck stock
