That is actually a terrible example and explanation.
ABS is actually proven to be able to make stopping worse. What it offers though, is a statistically lower chance of collision when performing PANIC breaking.

One condition where ABS can cause a collision is on a road that has one tire track covered in ice, the other hard dry pavement. In this condition, it can cause you to lose your brakes and slam into whatever is ahead of you, or even into an intersection to your death.

Also, in some conditions, you can stop faster by locking your brakes. Deep sand, for example. Lock your brakes in deep sand and you will plow down into it and stop faster.

Also note that pumping brakes is not really what you want to do. The objective is actually a technique called threshold braking. The pumping is for when you go slightly too far and lock your brakes, so you pull back and try threshold braking again. It is not just a matter of bouncing on the brake lever.

ABS is actually designed to allow the driver to steer during panic braking , no ?

Yes. Thing is though, if you're not panicing, you're not locking up the brakes, and you still can steer -- while being able to stop. On top of that, if youve got a bus on the right and oncoming traffic on the left, steering isnt going to do you much good. In the end of the day, you need both to be able to steer, as well as stop.

I get all that , I learned to drive prior to ABS , just saying , the primary reason for ABS is to be able to steer while slamming on the binders

Sure is. Problem though is that it is a conflict of objectives. From yours or my perspectives, its about being best equipped to avoid crashing. From the government and manufacturer's perspective, its about statistics. What will result in the lowest overall rate of crashes? For them, sacrifice a few to save a lot of incompetents.

I have decided to go with the Sport. I need the DCLB, and want 4x4. This should get me where I need to go 99.9% of the time. I have not decided if I will go new or used, but that is a whole different discussion/can of worms.
