Orange County CAF's: up to no good

technically you still have copyright even without a watermark, every image a photographer makes has an inherent copyright to it. However, to have the most copyright protection you have to register your images with the US Copyright Office and it costs like $30 an image or something like that...but if you do that and someone takes it without your permission, you can potentially win the lottery lol. If you don't register your image, you still have copyright but the most you can sue for is limited to whatever the amount was that they directly profited from the use of that image. It gets more complicated with social media because technically Facebook, instagram, twitter, etc. hold some rights to whatever gets posted. It's a messy ordeal TBH and I wouldn't take legal action unless they were blatantly profiting big time off of something the stole without permission.

In situations like this its mostly the principal of the matter that bugs me the most, and it sets a precedent for stealing other people's work in future circumstances

 

one of my instructors back in college was set for life when he was in his 20's because American Airlines used an image of his of BB King (or some famous blues musician) in print advertisement and he had a registered copyright on it
