This very true. Especially for a part-time-4wd, where the damage doesn't matter until 4wd is engaged. Of course, if one intends to use 4wd, then it's likely s/he is *needing* to have something reliable......something without the "I really needed to fix that a while ago, I hope it holds up!"
What will happen is that, instead if just having to replace the boot and grease, the whole axle shaft will need replacement. If this is something that is going to be done anyway, then it doesn't really matter when it's fixed.
Worst-case scenario is the joint separates under load. With 4wd, there are 3 other powered wheels, and there will be no loss of steering control. Transfer case may not be too happy with a sudden torque inequality......

Now, fwd cars is a different story. Joint separation there causes loss of steering control.

We have the new cv axle and all the components necessary...and HOPEFULLY, Brad's truck will be fixed by Saturday afternoon!

BTW: Shane, you doing anything Saturday? If you've done this before, we could use a hand...Also, there's a run up Main Divide from Ortega to Silverado Canyon at 8:00am if you're down.

Wtf were you doing in 4wd most of the trip?? I think I only put it in 4wd a handful of times. I could have done 100% of the trail in my old 1994 Mitsubishi base-model pickup (2wd, no power nuthin')! Yeah, I wouldn't have had as much fun going up and down the technicals, but I could have done the trail.

Is Saturday for fixing Brad's truck, or doing the trail? I'm
Either way: maybe. Depends on what The Boss says.
If you're looking to have me help on the work, where are you looking to do it? And what tools do you have/not have? Do you have air?

My place in Lake Forest/Trabuco Canyon
I have most necessary tools, we will be renting a slide hammer with attachments. I have an air compressor. Just need somebody with experience in swapping CV axles.
