    @PapaRee @TWTaco @SearArtist

    Reset the LV/AT values this morning and ran another series of highway tests. Cut to the chase, mileage is the same. If accounting for loss of turns reported by the ECU/speedometer due to increase in tire size, I figure I’m (still) at an average of 15 mpg for running long distances at highway speeds.

    I’ll go into more details about my findings and limiting factors, but convince me on a flat florida highway this is a good or improved number!

    Other notes, it seems there’s often a 4GR hang, similar to what was going on pre-tune, but not at such dramatic RPMs. It’s an improvement in fuel consumption and shifting in that gear for sure, but I’m still watching the road flatten out and wondering when 5GR will kick in.

    6GR I hardly ever see, and only for a few fleeting seconds while coming over the top of a hill and then its back into 5GR.

    In all honesty, in just observing the #s for where the engine likes to hang out at highway speeds, it looks like 4GR has better mileage as the load coming from 5GR tends to spike at 70-80 and drops mpg’s to 11-12 when it does so. 4GR seems to hang out at better #s.

    On the occasion when 5GR can work its magic, 1900-2200 RPM with a load of around 45-50 (which is basically light coasting) I’ll see those desired 17+ mpg numbers.

    So by the end of a trip, with some overtaking, exit slowdowns and on/off with the CC, I’ve finished each trip thus far between 14.5 and 15.5 mpg.

    ==== HIGHWAY TESTING ====

    Here’s my discoveries from the trials post LV/AT reset, no tune reflash and no speedometer re-calibration, only mathematical adjustments based on differences in dash speed to GPS speed.

    Note 1: Figures were taken during a flat stretch and when engine had a stable load.
    Note 2: MPG numbers have been adjusted by a factor of 1.04-1.06 depending on GPS to odometer speed differences.

    ==== 65 MPH ====

    For 62 mph dash (65 mph GPS) @ 60 load
    1875 RPM, 5GR: 16.1 - 17.0 mpg (adjusted)

    Could not find 6GR for long enough to pull any data.
    When load was below 60, mileage increased to 17.8 - 19.5 mpg (adjusted)

    ==== 69 MPH ====

    For 65 mph dash (68.8 mph GPS) @ 60 load
    1960 RPM, 5GR: 15.1 - 17.0 mpg (adjusted)

    Same as before, hardly saw 6GR long enough to pull any data.
    When load was below 60, mileage increased to 16.9 - 19.1 mpg (adjusted)

    ==== 74 MPH ====

    For 70 mph dash (74 mph GPS) @ 75 load
    2100 RPM, 5GR: 14.3 - 16.3 mpg (adjusted)
    1800 RPM, 6GR: 16.9 mpg (adjusted)

    ==== 79 MPH ====

    For 75 mph dash (78.5 GPS) @ 75 load
    3300 RPM, 4GR: 13.6 - 14.7 mpg (adjusted)
    2200 RPM, 5GR: 12.6 - 14.0 mpg (adjusted)

    Never saw 6GR.

    ==== LIMITING FACTORS ====

    It sucks I did two things at once and cannot truly test each component individually. So, I apologize for lumping the tune in with an increase in tire size, but its where I am at.

    I’ll try to list all the limiting and determining factors and see if maybe there’s some objective reasoning in here that can explain the drop in mileage.

    Before tune/tires during winter high desert travel
    - TSB update 04B04 w/5k miles of learning
    - 265/75r16 falken wildpeaks, 35 psi
    - 6000#s on CAT scales, loaded for winter overlanding
    - Prinsu + Smitty defender racks

    On the roof I carried: 2-4gal rotopax (filled), 1-1819 plano storage case (37 x 14 x 18) filled with camp fuels, spare oils, camp gear etc., 1-7gallon solar shower (filled) and 40lb of firewood bundled into a tarp. Inside I carried: a stove, cookware and 7 gallons of water @ about 100 lbs there as well.

    Avg mpg: 16.5 - 17.1 (adjusted) along mountainous roads

    After tune/tires along flat coastal highways
    - KDMAX 6.0 reg/reg tip w/shift lock
    - 285/75r16 GY duratracs, 41 psi
    - Removed all roof equipment, short of one small rifle case (-225 lbs)
    - Removed all cookware + water storage (-100 lb)
    - Prinsu and defender rack remained

    Avg mpg: 15 (adjusted) along flat, florida highways

    While I realize there’s about 7.5% more contact surface in the 33” tires, along with 55 additional lbs and 1” higher beneath the axles, the loss of 325 lbs and improvement in driving surfaces oughta balance things out, no?

    Maybe I’m wrong in this thinking, it just seems off. Like, really off. I try to look at what others are getting, compare weights, consider driving habits, all of the above but why am I closer to the guy above pulling a 30’ motor home for mpgs than I am to the guys bogging down the highway at 80 mph on their m/t 35’s?

    Any help, appreciated. Cheers

    Do you have the ability to flash a new tune?
    I think you may need some custom tuning and I am willing to try.

    4gr hang is happening here too. Works below 65 mph, but above that it would not shift. I took the truck above 90 mph to find the upshift point
    I use S mode to upshift and it works above 65 mph.
    I think the issue is with the code and not the tables.

    Code not the tables? Not sure I follow...

    4GR is great! Don’t get me wrong, where before I hated that gear, now its my favorite and 5GR is the indecisive one trying to figure out where it wants to settle at.

    I use S mode to overtake and boom, I’m lengths ahead. I like that. I still feel the indecisiveness in the gear selections, but its like putting lipstick on th pig. Still a pig at the end of the day.

    Will keep further testing the tune and currently running 89 octane in the reg performance. Forgot to mention that in my findings. From what I can tell, the learning is tracking upwards on MPGs, so its a good sign, but I doubt I’ll clear 16 anytime soon.

    Yep! Thanks for the tune! I didn’t have a lot of miles and I didn’t really romp on it to this point, but the tune really improved the acceleration lag when changing lanes and especially low speed turns and maneuvers. For those alone, it’s worth it.

    ...and it pulls pretty hard at higher RPMs too :D

    Quite a few things at this point..
    Wanted to check back in with an interesting find while out offroading yesterday. 4lo DESTROYED my MPGs like it never has before.

    The details: I filled my tank right before heading out and the destination was roughly 56 miles away. I got to the destination with my usual average of 16mpg, hit the service roads in 4hi and got to the first trail with roughly 15.8mpg. Switched to 4lo for the trail, then about half way through the trail I checked my MPGs again and saw the below.. 2.3MPG! It got to 1.9 by the time I got off that trail and as you can see this was 61.4 miles on this tank only, so I do understand that I'd see bigger shifts in MPGs at this point in my tank, but it's never been this huge of a drop before. I rather enjoy 4lo on technical trails and was a bit put off that I felt I had to stay in 4hi which for myself isn't as comfortable running trails in.

    20210414_172400.jpg

    Now, I did get back to 16MPG by the time I got back home, but mostly because it's almost all downhill traveling and freeways.

    In the past, I've always ended my offroading in the area I go to with around 13-14mpg on average when it's time to air back up, this trip I was at 9.4MPG.

    Another thing to note is I only had about 200 miles with this new tune, but I still wouldn't expect such a drastic difference in using 4lo on it eating up fuel economy.

    I ain't mad by any means, but I am wondering if something was done with 4lo for it to be so hungry, and if something can be done to make it less?

    I left the 4LO throttle at stock settings. And the 4lO shifting. It should be the same as stock except that it uses the tune for power.
    I would think it would be better not worse. Give it another try and let me know. May have been other factors?
    Just let me know after the next 4Lo adventure.

    Im still on my 1st gas tank at 91 Octane. Definitely a huge improvement over stock. Im not worried about gas mileage since i have a heavy foot. I like the power and the smooth shifting. Highy recommend the K&DMAX tune! Cant wait to see how it preforms after 3 tanks and the ECU learning my driving habit. Great job Dave! Thanks again! Looking forward to future mod updates.

    Yeah, throttle felt great, definitely no complaints with that. I'm not too knowledgeable with this stuff, but could the extra power from the tune be pulling more fuel? I'm not sure how it works lol. I'm not really sure what other factors could be at play, not ruling out that there were, but we did a route that I've done several times for the purpose of testing the tune offroad so I can compare to what I'm use to seeing. I'll definitely be testing out more, I think I'll be going out wheeling again Saturday.

    So you went from the LT to the SLT ? If that's what I saw in the other thread. Is it better with the SLT ?

    No, I'm still on LT, but considering the switch to SLT. Though I'm not sure I will as my only possible gripe might just be how 4lo operates but it may also not have a problem. I need to test more with it to see if the issue is the tune or other variables in why 4lo chugged through so much MPGs in such a short period than usual.
