I'm buying a 2018 Tacoma 4x4 off road, and learned that if I want the Premium package, that the hideous orange dash surround is my only option if I want a moonroof and heated seats :(

I already asked if the dealership if their parts dept could just order me the OEM silver version and swap it out for me (at my cost) and their answer was no, not possible... Should I push them on this??

The salesman at the dealership tells me that it's "easy" to take off the orange piece, get it wrapped/painted, and put back on, but I don't feel comfortable doing that myself (scared I'll break a clip or create a rattle).

Should I trust a place like CarToys to disassemble the dash on my new truck, then re-assemble after I have the piece professionally wrapped?

Anybody know where I can get a price for the silver OEM version?

    Other suggestions?

WTF is with Toyota only having this hideous, Nike-like orange as the only option paired with the moonroof package???

I'd push them on it, I know they can do it and you are dropping serious coin on a new truck. I'd make them do it pro-bono or find another dealer.

Honestly, they do just pop right off. The vent outlets are part of it. Super easy. I've had mine off three times.

There is no reason that you can't get them in a different color. I'd skip your dealer and order them from one of the good dealers that post on TW, or talk to the folks on TW who make vinyls.

I've got an orange truck and would like the orange trim. If you're intersted, I can pop off my black/graphite trim and trade you

I agree with what others have said. IF that dealer is willing to lose a sale over that piece of plastic then they are nuts! Not to mention, they are probably not being competitive with their prices either if that is something they won't negotiate on. Maybe call another dealer.

Thank you for all of the great and quick responses. I'm pushing the dealer on swapping out the dash piece for the silver OEM version, at no cost... we will see... All-in cost they are quoting me (includes $450 title/registration, and swapping out the grill for the "Pro" version) is $40k.

That said, I have to say that this guy's truck is pretty awesome (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mesojdms-quicksand-build-thread.502771/) and the wrap he did on his dash piece is inspired!

Is this really true? The Moon roof equals an orange dash? Can I specify this when I order?

Whoever answered your question is a chucklehead that doesn't belong within a mile of any type of customer service.

    Or completely ignorant. Maybe both.

Unless you've already got the screaming deal of a lifetime, tell your salesman you'll be buying elsewhere if he doesn't make this happen for you, on their dime. I mean seriously. It will cost them less than a set of 'free' floor mats or some other silly bonus he wants to make you feel good with.

At least for the 2016 and 2017 models, if you wanted the BLACK interior you got the orange surround. If you got the GREY interior you got the grey surround.

I'm sure it is the same for the 2018 as well.

FYI - I have the black interior with the orange stitching and surround, and in my opinion it looks far better than the standard/bland grey interior.

Just so you know also, that may be the only option available to you in that lot, but the truck can come with the “graphite” interior bezel with the moonroof and everything else. If the dealer is telling you it only comes in orange on a moonroof model, they are lying because they have a specific truck they want to sell you.

They are very easy to swap. If I had known that before I would have ordered mine with the orange surround because I think the orange stitching on the seats is a nice detail.

But it sounds like another dealership is in order, maybe it changed for 18, but my 17 had the option for either orange or the gray. I have the premium tech package with moonroof and heated seats.

My biggest issue with the orange is that it's very similar to Nike vintage orange... and I absolutely can't stand Nike. Maybe it will grow on me, but I'll never be able to disassociate it from Nike which is a problem haha

haha, definitely one of the more interesting arguments against the orange. I would just order the replacement grays from the dealership and then swap them out yourself, it might take 15 minutes. The goto TW guy is @gunny1005. He's out of a dealership in AZ, great service!

The orange dash piece is only on those trucks with the black seats.....It has orange seams and the trim piece...!

VERY easy to remove and trade..!

Repeat what everyone else has said. I was in the same boat, the orange comes with the black seats (orange stitching). I only wanted the black seats, so ended up ordering the gray bezel and swapping it myself. About 2 min to remove the trim from the truck, 5 min to remove the ~12-16 screws, 5 seconds to slap back in. I still have my stock orange, and might be trading in the truck so will have gray available if you're interested.

I don't see a dealer willing to do this swap for you though, fight them all you want, or get them to toss it in (~$60 I believe in parts), and do it yourself.
