Just about to "order" TRD OR with a rare color (quicksand) and packages (advanced tech, navi, led). The options package doesn't exist in my area (california).

I'm working with a broker that's going to order through a dealer in his network with $500 refundable deposit. Although the deal I'm getting isn't all that great, I decided to just go for it since i can at least have the option I want. Broker is saying it takes typically about 2 months between submitting the build and build from factory.

    Questions to fellow TW members:

    1. What's your experience on "ordering" your vehicle? Any negatives?
    2. Two months build time frame. Is this realistic?
    3. Is there a place I can check on the progress of the build or can only go through dealer?
    4. Is the deposit really refundable? Dealers would like to probably hang on to the deposit as long as they possibly can to get you to get a car from them. For those who canceled, how easy/difficult was it to get the refund from dealer?

My first time ordering (I was surprised, b/c dealers don't like to order although sometimes they pull vehicles in allocation).

    Thanks.

I’ve done it twice. Usually 2-6 months depending on the config you want. Sometimes faster if they can find one somewhere or swap allocations to an earlier build.

gotta go through the dealer for updates.

I’ve never had to put down a deposit so idk.

Thanks. I didn't know you don't need to deposit. Something to explore.

Right from Toyota “no guarantee” you can buy only what they build. Anyone tells you any different and there will be some...Are just plain full of shit.

It just depends on the dealer.

I ordered a new 2020 Tacoma on January 22 of this year. It was built on February 25. In Port day after tomorrow and is supposed to be delivered no later than March 23. Almost 2 months to the day. Your Dealer can give you a Pre-Vin number. It will be like a build number. The 1st half will be part of your actual vin. You can check on Toyota's website for your Trucks information, though it will be limited. When your pre-vin comes back as invalid your truck has been built. Ask your dealer for your actual vin. They can then give you approximate updates on delivery.

Dealer is not guaranteeing anything and telling me it's now about six months. They said they will submit my build (only when I pay deposit) and it's a waiting game after that. Don't understand why they want deposit for something they aren't sure whether the factor will accept to build. Is it just dealer tactic to take my deposit hostage and force me to buy from them? It's refundable, but i don't want to fight them to get my deposit back. Anything can happen in six months and not going to give them deposit on something I'm not sure if/when it will be built.

I ordered mine. They said 2 months initially but were able to find one and reroute it so only took 3-4 weeks.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I read that thread and other threads. I was surprised to find out they can order for me - not pull from what's in allocation or in assembly line.

I currently have a 2020 Offroad on order.
I put the $500 deposit to the local dealer last October which submitted an "allocation request" for the truck I wanted to the regional distributor (Gulf States Toyota).
The allocation wasn't accepted by Gulf States until the end of January.
In mid-February, the dealer said my allocation had shown up in their computer as "incoming", with a target arrival date of April 29.

I'd say the 2-4 month timeframe is correct, but it's from the time your allocation request is accepted ("yes, we will build this truck"), not from when the dealer makes the allocation request.

There is no place for the customer to check on the status, only the dealer can check.

If I could do it again, I would have just done a nationwide search on cars.com for the model I wanted and bought from an out-of-state dealer. In the past 3 month I have found the truck I want at about a half dozen other dealers (but none in the Gulf States region).

I had the same problem. No one buys TRD OR in the gulf states so they hardly make any. I did manage to intercept one going to El Paso though.

My problem was that I wanted one with a manual transmission. They just don't order them.
