Ordering a Tacoma? Am I getting the runaround?

I put an order in for a very specific tacoma yesterday all over email, text and the phone because that dealership is offering the lowest price, but its about an hour away, but the salesman sounds genuine.

However, he says they can't provide an order details record (other than a buyers order with vehicle type (tacoma), color, and out the door price, until it gets scheduled to be built, which is likely a month before delivery.

I'm looking for a record of the order details (model, options, packages, etc.). I find it crazy they can't provide it. Is there some term (other than 'buyer's order') that I could request with the order options details so I'm not screwed in 3 months?

This is what I told them to order:

    2017 TRD Off Road 4x4
    Double Cab Long Bed
    Automatic transmission, Tow package
Silver Sky Metallic with graphite interior
Premium and Tech package with JBL

I ordered one and the next stage after Ordering was it getting "Accepted" into the system which they were able to tell me.

That's probably true, they may even try to do a Dealer Trade because they should be able to find one that he wants pretty easily.

Pretty much the same for me, went and checked 5 dealerships in my area to see who would get their allocation the quickest. One had a truck coming but wrong color within the month I was ordering but had to submit a color change to get approved if I wanted it. I did so they submitted, it got approved and 8 weeks later my truck arrived.

    Did you provide a deposit?

Haven't heard much dealing being done on ordered trucks, mine was MSRP last year when the LB Offroads were still very rare.
Most of the deals I've seen here are negotiated with current lot inventory.

@19glendale I essentially went through the same process. They won't have anything CONCRETE for you until Toyota accepts the allocation request or they find your truck elsewhere. It took me 8 weeks from then to delivery (this was April-June of last year). Did you place a deposit?

@jsinnard No one but Mechanicsville Toyota would deal with me on an order. Actually most dealers didn't want to deal with me on their lot inventory either (some acted especially douchey). Mechanicsville gave me just a bit over invoice on a manual that they had to "order."

I was looking more to get the truck I wanted now instead of the best deal, told them all whoever was going to get me the truck the quickest would be the dealer getting my business. Most wanted me to look at Shortbeds they already had in their inventory and I would just point to the 1st gen SB truck I drove up in and say "do you want to sell me a truck or not, I already have a damn SB".

I bought my truck a little earlier than planned since I found exactly what I wanted sitting on a lot.

If it's a month out it would already be on their allocation.

When I ordered mine I got a signed order with all the information and options I wanted with the agreed price. They will look to trade from other dealers that are close by to get you what you want. If they cannot locate one they put in a allocation change request. They won't know anything until the request is accepted by the factory. Once in the factory system it gets a temp vin# when the truck is built it gets a real vin#. Then about 3 weeks to get it to the dealer. Could be faster depending on where you are located. The sales department kept me informed every step of the way.

I am getting the run a round in general Down here in Texas and no one really seems to know why. But there is an over abundance of certain models leaving San Antonio, Texas going to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Mass ect I have personally communicated with these dealerships who say I could pay to have a Truck shipped back to Texas were they originated from. And the Texas dealerships are not allowed to request or sell any of that inventory unless it is a special order....meantime trucks are setting in the snow, idle in PA. No one is able to make sense of this..other than common core mathematicians.

I am running into the duche factor as well. One sales guy today told me I insulted him on the phone so, I hung up.

They move these trucks too quick to give a f*** unfortunately. I emailed every dealer in VA and NC (to cover two distribution regions). Once they understood I knew more than them (more about the trucks less about their process till now) and there were other dealers in play the games slowed down.

At least you aren't having to run around trying to find your truck from a dealer that isn't doing the added msrp of an extra $1975 for bs I don't even want. That's all that's keeping me from buying a new truck, I've found 2 I want but I will not pay for $1975 of crap I don't want! Damn Toyota and their bs msrp dealer packages.

From my own experience, Toyota is getting their way when it comes to Tacoma's, I really believe they under-produce Tacoma's on purpose so they are becoming more and more desirable and we are willing to put up with it because enough of us want Tacoma's so bad that we are willing to pay top
dollar for a product they make us believe is worth it.
Notice you never see TV commercials deals on Tacomas?? Notice salesman don't even try hard to sell you one?? Their commission on Tacoma's is so low they don't think is worth their time Unless they upswell you accessories and upgrades. So if you want to get the Tacoma you want at RETAIL your only option is to wait. Don't get me wrong, I waited 3 months !! And still think is worth it. You'll be happy I once you get it.

Go to dealer, tell them you want one off allocation, straight off the truck with no dealer adds. If they cannot do this, tell them you will be forced to go elsewhere. Then consider buying out of state, buy a cheap southwest ticket and go pick up your truck from a dealer willing to negotiate and sell you what you want.
