Costco referred me to Toyota of Glendale who offered me the truck I want for MSRP.... so where's the huge discount?

O.k. I want to clarify some things here. I spoke with my dealer about this ordering issue we have. He breaks it down to me like this. There are 3 ways they try to get a truck if they don't have it in stock. 1: He can do a search and see if one in the area matches and get a dealer trade. 2: Check allocations, if one that matches is going to another dealer, change allocations to have come to him. 3: Yes, he can order direct from Toyota if options 1 and 2 are not satisfactory. So, those saying a dealer can't order direct, maybe they just don't know how or don't want to, but it can be done.

What's not clear on your third point, is...
All Tacoma's come from a regional "port". When a dealer "orders" a customer, does he find that truck match from one in "port" or due to "port"? Or does he (like domestic customer orders), place an order with the factory in Texas or Mexico?

They don't place an order, they ask for an order and Toyota or the distributor says I have this one coming in about 1.5 months, do you want it?

as was my understanding. many think they are "ordering" a truck. when they are actually making a "search" for a truck that fits their criteria.
I've factory ordered several vehicles in the past (domestic brands), and it is actually a factory order.
Hell, you can factory order a new vette...and select museum delivery. They'll even let you walk the production line as YOUR car is built. And even be the 1st to fire up the engine. I've even seen where guys have twisted a few wrenches on the line...just for photo op, of course.

Toyota won't let you take a cell phone into the tour. They will never let you do anything like that, and I don't want common people walking beside my new Tacoma!

Hello - Long time lurker here.
I have a 2004 Rav4 MT that I plan to retire for a new DC OR 4x4 MT Inferno.
I walked into the dealer that had a $40,000+ Inferno AT Sport out front. It had all the bells : Tonneau / black ovals / JBL

So I asked the sales guys about ordering a MT OR DC. He gets my info and walks over to one of the head honchos with a center desk.

The honcho SAYS - and I'm not shitting you -
"Tell him to go to NISSAN" - yes I heard that.........

I live in a large MidWest community with 10 area dealers. AND I bought my wives Matrix from them. OK - I will NEVER walk in there again !

The sales guys basically said that they won't order a truck. They found a MT DC OR 4x4 Inferno in Columbus Ohio for 37,438 MSRP. They could get it for me - but since the trucks are "So New" and Ïn high demand" - they wouldn't budge much on the price - maybe $200.
Plus - he offered me low blue book for my Rav4.
Ordering through Toyota would cost $3000 - and reserving the car above for be at least $500.

UGH - I'm livid. I don't blame the sales guy - the dealership is just a piece of crap.

Through USAA / TrueCar, I found Certified Dealers with a price range of 35,500 - 36000 for the same truck. Plus 0.99% APR with Car Discount Buying Service.

Anyway - thought I'd share my experience and say thanks to all for the great info on this forum.

    Bandwagoning with the truthers..

You cannot custom order a Toyota straight from the factory.

You can get in line for the next truck that matches your criteria and claim it as soon as it is officially scheduled to be built.

You can also request a particular build but if Toyota doesn't feel like making it you're sol.
