do you mind elaborating on how the iPad works as a gps? how do you not run out of data?

The mapping apps are all downloaded maps and I plug in a glonass gps for accuracy. I don't use any data since the since the full map is built into the app. It isn't streaming map data from the internet like google maps would (even though you can manually download google maps data to your device). It is essentially a TomTom or Garmin on steroids. Cheaper and more functional than a nice GPS too.

Right now I just make my wife hold the iPad or I put it in my lap. I'm too cheap for a lot of the mounts out there haha. I looked at the Mob Armor mount here but I have higher things on the priority list.

Yeah it would! Too bad most of the areas I go in Alaska wouldn't get any signal anyway.

Do you prefer Gaia or Hema?

Save your money and get Hema. They pull from the same mapping sources but I feel like hema is a more polished complete app. Very easy to use once you explore it a little bit. I wish I did a little more research before buying both. I'm thinking I'll make a little review soon on the interior set up.

I loved Gaia on my iPhone and am thinking of buying it for my S7. Wish I had a tablet to run it on.

Just throwing this out there, I've got a Tacoma Tech Deck with Ram mounts for the iPad and happy with the set up. Very strong and stable. Tech Deck looks like this...

That looks good. So, I actually am in the process of selling my truck right now. I now have an FJ Cruiser and will be looking at doing an in dash mount.
