M8000 is at the upper limits of its ability with our truck. The curb weight is 4220 lbs, and when you start adding camping gear, bigger tires, armor, and so on, you can easily add lots of weight.
When measuring for a winch, you multiply by 1.5 times.
That means an M8000 is only going to want to see about 5300 lbs.

I'd rather have you opt for an XD9000 or so.

I always recommend synthetic. There's no choice in my mind to use steel.

I don't think I'd ever do synthetic. The worry of a small nick, it getting dirty and having to clean it. I'm sticking with steel. :anonymous:

Unless you are really dragging it over stuff, you aren't going to nick it. If you are dragging it a lot, you probably could do a better rigging half the time. Additionally, the intense danger of steel breaking vs synthetic is enough for me (of course, synthetic still requires proper safety). Synthetic floats, it is stronger, and lighter as well. You can also do a field repair if it breaks. You can turn broken line into recovery ropes, such as a winch line extension.I talked to Bill Burke, and out of all the seminars he puts on, he recommends that you only really need to wash it in dish soap once a year unless you have a ton of grit in it.

Although most people aren't aware, you are supposed to keep steel regularly oiled. You also have to spool it in under tension otherwise it's a mess (synthetic doesn't care as much). I always recommend gloves when winching, but with steel it is a must in case you have a fray.

Yeah, I'm totally on the synthetic kool aid :D

So that is for their industrial line. Hence being twice the cost of the Superwinch contactor. I finally freaking found the Warn version of the Superwinch contactor that Warn uses in the newer m8000's. It is part # 81400. Ordered it today and I'll post a write up about how that goes.

I don't know why all the write ups I found everyone just used Superwinch instead of finding the correct Warn contactor.

Hell yea, this was my 5th year down there! Are they competing next year? I wouldn't mind helping a team out. The turbo buggy was badass! It walked write up Backdoor. I think I know exactly which 4 seater you're talking about. He makes Backdoor look like no work at all. He was there again this year. Such a sick rig.

Thats pretty cool you have been able to go that many times. I only went once and it was about 5 years ago. Yeah the turbo buggy is built by Ryan Delaney of Rydel fab. He built everything himself and it was his first time building a buggy like that. Very impressive fabricator thats for sure. The 4 seater has been going there for a long time. I actually rode in it with the previous owner. All those guys from the Eugene/Springfield area go every year. The team that competed was Sky's Off Road Design (SORD) which is a first gen tacoma. It was there first year competing so I'm sure they will be back. 10404855_860812340608340_495615679384323_ed395236dfc3e168a7dcad26cd099e62e01067e6.jpg

So the xd9000 is roughly the same price as the Zeon 10-s. My only issue would be fitment in an arb bumper. Any thoughts on the Zeon? I am marginally familiar with xd series.

I was thinking originally 500-600 bucks. As truck is already armored with 35's, I agree I need to go with a 9-10k winch. Your expertise is always appreciated

Really, it wasn't the one I posted? I know people are using that one...

I think it's because Superwinch came to market with the contactors first. Albright makes the controls for both companies, so someone got smart and tried hooking things up. Most of those posts are pretty old and that's why you don't see any info on the current set of products.

Also, did you read post 9 and 11 of what I had linked? Those were the important bits. Basically, as you said the 34971 is industrial grade. I'm not sure if the lower end contactor has the same protection, but it's a pretty huge safety factor to have a control that locks out in the open position when it fails. Imagine your control giving out and the winch continuously spooling!

    Anyway, here's those posts:

Well, I spent about the last 2.5 hours mucking about trying to find comparisons (holy crap I should stop!), and I can't find a ton factual. This is what I've come up with (I included the 9.5XP simply because that's what I have and I just wanted to see)

    • Rated pull: Well, this is obvious. It's in the name
    • Gear ratio: The Zeon has a higher gear ratio. It's going to pull stronger, but slower. This isn't bad because the 9.5XP was regarded as almost too fast of a winch. Slower winches can sometimes be safer and easier to manage, just as long as they aren't ridiculously slow.
    • motor: I don't know the size of the zeon, which is frustrating. The 9.5XP is 6HP, which explains why it beats the XD9000's smaller 4.6hp.
    • Clutch: zeon uses a rotating ring gear. The others use a sliding ring gear. I don't know what this is, hopefully somebody can chime in.
    • drum diameter: the zeon is .5" wider. This might help disperse heat?? Maybe helps with strength?? I don't think it matters since the 9.5XP was one of their top winches in the past
    • Power draw: this was kind of interesting, it seems the zeon does the best job at really tough or really light pulls, but spikes bigtime around 6k lbs. The other two are pretty linear and power hungry. I'm not an expert, but I'd assume you could say that your average amount of work is going to happen in the middle of those extremes, so the zeon is going to suck more on average in this category
    • Size: the zeon is big but people have been making them fit. The control box can be mounted remote, no more integrated-only styles. Note that I've hacked my control box up pretty good to do custom mounting, so I don't think curvy shapes are all that great.
    • waterproofness: the zeon is the only one that has a an IP rating of 68, which is very advantageous, especially considering WARN doesn't warranty against water getting into the electronics of the motor past the 1 year mark, even on the zeon. The others weren't subjected to an IP rating.
    • Price: just off gowarn.com, I see zeon $1250, 9.5XP $1450, XD9000 $1093. I found the 9.5XP-S (the synthetic version) on Amazon for $1600.

Based on that little bit, the zeon looks like the winner in terms of price and new tech.
The only things I still don't like (unless I'm missing something) is their stance on warranty vs. water, and I'm not sure if any of the winches have a 100% load holding brake like a Superwinch.
WARN was super nice to me when I had my winch repaired (they really look out for search & rescue, military, police, etc.), so I do have a bit of a soft spot for them still.
Repairs in Clackamas is pretty nice to have as well.

Note: red text is an estimate since I don't have actual numbers for these values. I just did the average between the last two known values.

Looks like I have to run it out and wash it, I have been thru some Tahuya size "puddles" last year. Looking at the inside of the hood, the rotational spray of the fan blades indicate the puddles were at "winch" level.

Do I need to record a DIY on washing synth winch cable, complete with some Betty Crocker or Martha Steward soundtrack in the background??

As always, your depth of research and knowledge is astounding!

Looks like with my bumper, I am limited to 9.5XP, XD9000, or M8000. I really liked the looks and capabilities of the Zeon. I have to be conscious of price also, so it like the XD9K for James.

Unless somebody has one they need to sell, or possibly trade for a headache rack??

Yeti, you can pair it with my wireless controller install video

FYI you might want to open it up and grease it up as well. I forgot what chemical you are supposed to use, I have it written down somewhere

Um, I have an older winch called Mile Marker that was installed by the prior owner... I would really like a wireless Warn winch...

Aussies are assbiters. Great if you want to push cows around, not great if you enjoy the presence of humans. I hate cow dogs almost as much as I hate cows.

Dang guys... Got me worrying. I've never had a dog before. I did primarily want a beagle just I thought these puppies look pretty damn cute. Think I should wait it out for just a beagle puppy? I'm torn...
