if i was in your boat, i would skip the whole puppy scene if you dont have the time to dedicate. Try going to a shelter to find a aussi to see if you like how that breed acts. Active dogs need the exercise, otherwise they are just a ball of energy. My german short hairs are like this.....which is why i let them loose on our land and take them for trips every weekend.

Beagles are highly dependent. Don't plan on leaving them alone. Ever.

My advice is get a small dog at least to start, around 20 lbs or maybe a bit less. Its not going to impress the guys, but you aren't going to get accused of compensation either.
Little dogs are easy to manage, live long, make smaller messes, and generally easy to exercise. Big dogs are like big slobbery hairy horses that you stable in your house.

We had a runty little mutt that weighed in at 15ish pounds. Its was the most dedicated, loveable dog we ever had, and didn't cost much more than the $5 we paid to the guy selling it from his station wagon. At that weight you aren't very useful, but it did its damnedest to sit with you while you were sick, bark at strangers coming to the house, and follow my brother wherever he went. We never needed a leash, it never jumped on anyone outside the immediate family, and we never trained it. It lived about 14 years. The only bad thing I'll say is that it couldn't survive a car ride.

Mom has a westie now. It lives up to its breed - its a hearty little bastard and is ready for adventure. It loves everybody but gets defensive when my aunts hyperactive terrier comes over. We can never let it off leash because its totally independent - bad training on our part.

Get a lab. I had a beagle lab with an ex. She was 40lbs and loyal but definitely had a knack for exploring.

I have a lab now. He is 82lbs and is the best lap dog you could have. I let him off the leash in the woods and he is never more than 15-20 ft away. He is only 2 so I am still working on training him. Hope to have him trained to be on 1 word commands without hesitation soon. He is kenneled at home while I am at work and then I walk him or play fetch at the park almost daily. The most loyal dog around and super friendly.

If you pay attention to the family history of the labs, so buy from a good breeder, you can get labs that have a really good chance of being smaller. My pups dad was 80 & his mom was 75 so 82lbs for him is good.

I have a lab too. I got him in Germany as a pup, greatest dog I have ever owned. I have a buddy that used to raise beagles for rabbit hunting. There were not house pets, but well cared for and I spent quite a bit of time in my youth hunting them and running all over with 'em.

For a young guy, they are a fantastic dog but you have to dedicate the time to let them do what they are bred to do...chase bunnies. If you can't do that, they will find an alternative, like the neighbors cat. If you don't take them for walks, they will escape and take themselves for walks. They also live forever! My buddy had one named Elmer that was fifteen years old. Just some things to think about.

My Chocolate Lab, named Bradley after the famous Army General. He's got a better life than most people. Myself included.

Beautiful dog! He looks like he has bear paws! And Beagles will dig under your fence and be gone faster than you think.

He has some interesting genetics. He is closer to what Labs looked like 100 years ago (when they were called the "St John's water dog" than what American breeders have done with them (although he is AKC registered). His grandpa came from the Royal Kennels in England, who had a direct line on a handful of labs that survived the purge when the Canadians killed them all off. This guy was born in 1885, and is the foundational dog to all modern labs. (note the paws)

I want a Belgian actually more than another GSD. My last one had to be put down at 4 years old. Stupid cancer

That sucks. They are very interesting dogs. The first one I met the SF handler advised me not to fuck with it. (we were staying in the same hooch) He said the last time they were downrange they sent it into a building before the team went in, and when they got to the bedroom he was eating the face off of a bad guy. I said "roger". I don't think I made eye contact with that dog for two days. lol

I just want a puppy since it's my first dog and I want to train it. It will definitely be an active dog. I need one to keep up with my constant adventures.
I want a medium sized dog. And I want the beagle cuz I never will leave it alone. It will ride to work with me every morning and here at work it can hang out in the show room, go to jobsites, and play outside in the grass with my supervision...
I really don't want to have a lab because all of my friends and even my sister have one. I want something different... I also love labs to pieces but they can be so big and doofy ya know?

My concern with the aussie/beagle mix is mostly behavior and appearance  I really love the look of a beagle and I kinda want it to behave like one. Then again I'm sure this dog would be just as loyal and adventurous... I DON'T KNOWWW AGH! I'm going to look at them Friday. I'm also torn between a girl or a boy. Both will be fixed. Anyone have advice/opinions on that?

My lab Coors is my co pilot and women suck with directions so +1 for male

My beagle lab was female. Both are/were fixed and I didn't notice any behavior issues that were specific male vs female.

I want male mostly so I can name it Brian haha. I've *heard* people say girl dogs can be moody/less affectionate but then I've also heard the exact opposite..

Yeah idk. Coors never leaves my side except when I go to work. He loves people and likes to say hi to them but after they pet his head he is right back to my side. And he is definitely big and doofy haha!

My parents have a couple labs. Absolute teddy bears, but not the brightest bunch in the world haha. Most of that has to do with them being raised in town before we got them. They love nothing more than loving on their people though. Mom also has a pomeranian. Avoid rat dogs at all costs. We used to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback that was an absolutely superb dog.

Keep an eye on the Oregon humane Society's Web site. We got our black lab/German Shepard as a 6 week puppy. She's been great. I trained her to stay close to me, basic commands etc. She stays close off leash and when playing fetch doesn't care about other dogs.

I grew up with a beagle and an Airedale. We had a few acres of land that bordered on three sides by a several thousand acre tree farm. Those dogs had room to run for days and where great companions. I've haven't owned a dog since until six months ago. My daughters wanted a dog like grandmas, lol. We now have a mini Aussie blue Merle and he's been a great dog. Very hyper, but he keeps us busy, and as stated before they are not very loving being primarily a hurding breed. I voted for a chocolate lab.

Had a great weekend at the coast. The weather was perfect and the dunes were fun as always.1691A5EB-263F-4995-9217-DA7EAD8CEFCD_zps_aefcb5277e8c6b2f134c2b47e9352e1e44d1e821.jpg0CF75830-A486-451A-9FA2-F76DBD691B10_zps_d14a76ccf44fd305e5e7e1262ec9a0a11b9ee8da.jpg
