there are a bunch of parks around that area if you explore along the coastal hwy. Haystack rock, devils punchbowl are close by. Here is a link to the coastal hikes that are common

Ecola State Park is just south of you all, on the other side of the headland from Seaside. A gorgeous bunch of seastacks and scenery. Cannon Beach is also a cute little cottage-style beach town with some fun shops... which will get you in well with the wife.

Cannon Beach has a spectacular Haystack Rock, and also has a hardware store that doubles as a public house. Buy a Hammer, get hammered.

I want a hat from there, but they were closed the last time we were up that way. I'm down the coast about 90 miles from Seaside.

    Have a great trip!

Hey User Man :)... here's your tutorial. In the bottom left corner of the map window of Google Earth (you'll have to plug in a location besides planet earth on the screen)... you'll see the words "tour guide." It's white letters with black background.

To the right of the "tour guide" icon is a year number. Click on the "1994" or whatever year number you see. A timeline bar should open up in the upper left side of the screen.

Play around with sliding the pointer along the line... if they've got the imagery, you can see it. I found some pictures posted for the Bay Area in CA from back in the '30s. Was really cool to see it before the population explosion.

Well, considering all the knowledge I've soaked up in a week of being on TW... pleased to actually contribute something useful. :)

That's what it's all about. I have exact grid co-ordinates coming tomorrow. I contacted a motorcycle buddy who actually went there last summer. It took him two attempts to find it, as the info he was given was one ridge off from the actual site. Could be a map datum thing too, everyone loves sharing lat/long without that key piece of info. That's why I prefer MGRS, but it seems to confuse civilians.

    LOL Yup.

Standardization, damnit. I was a SAC warrior... standardization. LOL Why can't everyone just use the same mapping system?

Awesome you got the right coordinates for the crash site. It looks like a fun ride.

If I have to, I can. For some reason the BLM uses that antiquated system so if you want to find the old gold mines you have to know it. MGRS is just simple and more accurate for pinpoint stuff, but I understand that surveyors in the 1800's didn't have the technology we do today and had to figure out a system that worked with fixed measuring "chains". I get it, I just don't like it.

LOL I still can't remember how many feet there are in an acre. They taught those Army guys all that stuff, I guess... I sat underground and minded huge hunks of metal rockets.

And I'll admit it... had to Google MGRS. My acronym-speak has dribbled away from me after 20 yrs. LOL Where'd the time go?

That's the only kind of dog that has bit me more than once. My buddy had one and it was a psychopath. It would sneak up on me and bite the back of my calf. I'm not a cow and you don't need to herd me you little bastard.

Labs won't save your life, but they sure are cool dogs.
